Softball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader to St. Elizabeth in Season Opener

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader at home to St. Elizabeth in the Bulldogs' season opener today.  Brooklyn fell to the Eagles, 17-4, in the Game 1 and 14-3 in Game 2 of the doubleheader.  St. Elizabeth improved to 3-9 on the season with the victories.  Brooklyn remains home in non-conference on Thursday, March 30, to take on local foe, St. Joseph's Brooklyn.  First pitch for Game 1 of the scheduled doubleheader is slated for 5:00 pm.

Game 1 Recap - Brooklyn - 4 | St. Elizabeth - 17

The Eagles wasted little time getting on the board first, scoring three runs in their first at-bat of the day.  An RBI single scored a lead-off double for the Eagles' first run of the afternoon.  Following a couple of singles, an RBI single drove in the final two runs of the inning.

Brooklyn starting pitcher, sophomore Uena Xharo quieted the Eagle bats in the second inning with a pair of strikeouts and foul out to the catcher in order.  However, St. Elizabeth opened the game up in the top of the 3rd, scoring 7 runs on six hits, jumping out to a 10-0 lead after three innings. St. Elizabeth continued their offensive attack in the fourth inning, scoring six more runs.

The Bulldogs would answer in the bottom of the fourth inning, leading off with a double hit by junior infielder Breanna Maresca who would give BC their first run on a double-steal situation.  After a couple of walks, sophomore outfielder Brianna Preston hit a single that drove sophomore second baseman Nicole Rose home.  Following a ground out, freshman center fielder Leslie Lima hit an RBI single scoring sophomore outfielder Angelica Cornier. Preston would eventually cross home after a wild pitch for the Bulldogs' last run of the game.

Maresca went 2-3 for the game with two doubles.  Sophomore catcher Shakira Feliciano also went 2-3 with a double and a single.

Game 2 Recap - Brooklyn - 3 | St. Elizabeth - 14

The Eagles once again got ahead early and never looked back, scoring all 14 of their runs in the first three and a half innings. Brooklyn would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth, leading off with a Maresca double.  She would come around to score on a Cornier RBI ground-out.

The highlight of the day for the Bulldogs came in the bottom of the fifth inning.  With freshman center fielder Leslie Lima on second after hitting a single and stealing second, Feliciano would step to the plate and crush a homer out to left center field.  However, the Eagles got the final out of the game following a Maresca walk.

BC rookie starting pitcher Anna Curran was credited with the loss.  Feliciano was 2-3 once again with the two-run jack and a single.
