Brooklyn Falls to Cabrini in First Round of NCAA Tournament, 65-52

Scranton, PA---Making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, the Brooklyn College women's basketball team, came up short tonight in its First Round game against Cabrini University, falling to the Cavs, 65-52.  Brooklyn closes out the 2017-18 season with a 24-4 record and its first CUNYAC title since 1980.  Cabrini will move onto the Second Round of the tournament tomorrow against the winner of host, No. 11 Scranton University, and Keuka College.

Brooklyn senior guard Karen Mak ended her stellar Bulldog career, leading BC with 16 points.  The prototypical floor general also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists to teammates in the effort.

Cabrini shot 12-29 from beyond the arc for the game to Brooklyn's 6-23.  The Cavs were also almost perfect from the free throw line for the game, connecting on nine of ten attempts.  Brooklyn had a rough night at the charity stripe, shooting 6-13 as a team.

Three Cavs reached double-figures in scoring for the game, led by Kate Lannons' game-high 18 points off of the bench.  Lannon shot 4-6 from beyond the arc for the game.  Naomi Washington added 17 points while shooting 3-9 from three.  Meghan Matthews recorded the contest's only double-double, finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Trailing by as many as 21 points to start the final quarter, the Bulldogs never went away, cutting the Cabrini lead to as few as 11 points, 61-50, with 2:35 left in the game.  Cabrini weathered the late BC storm with a 4-0 run with 2:12 remaining in the contest.  Senior forward Weronica Green scored the game's final bucket on a reverse lay-in with 1:48 left in the game.

Brooklyn displayed its resilience in the third quarter, going on an 8-0 run to cut the Cabrini lead to 39-30 with 4:18 left in the period.  Cabrini answered the call, closing out the third quarter on a 14-5 run.

Cabrini outscored the Bulldogs 25-8 in the second quarter to head into the lockers with a 35-18 lead.  The Cavs used the long-ball to its advantage in the first half, shooting 7-18 from beyond the arc.  Brooklyn was paced by Mak's nine first half points.

The Cavs came out in the second quarter with a 5-0 run to force a Brooklyn timeout early in the period.  Freshman guard, Taylor George would stop the bleeding with a made three with just under seven minutes to play in the first half.  George finished with 10 points for the game, shooting 3-5 from beyond the arc. Cabrini continued its run, extending the lead to 12, 25-13, with 4:48 left in the first half.

After Cabrini opened the game with a three-point make, both teams were stagnant offensively for the next couple of minutes.  Brooklyn would then go on an 8-2 run to take an 8-5 lead.

Mak would score the first two buckets for BC to cut the Cabrini lead to 5-4 with 4:33 left in the first quarter.  A fast-break lay-in finished by BC junior forward, Jasmine Hansgen, gave BC its first lead of the game, 6-5, with 3:37 to go in the opening quarter.  Hansgen remained tough through the contest for the Bulldogs, grabbing a team-high 10 boards.  The Cavs tied the game, 10-10, with 1:30 left in the quarter.
