Bulldogs Split With Valley Forge for First Win of the Season

Brooklyn, NY---Rolling to a 23-11 in Game 1 and just edged in Game 2, 10-8, the Brooklyn College softball team scored a non-conference doubleheader split for its first win of the season against the University of Valley Forge this evening.  Brooklyn moves to 1-9 with the split while the Patriots also picked up their first win of the season to move to 1-9 with the Game 2 victory.  The Bulldogs return to conference action on Saturday as they play host to the College of Staten Island.  Game 1 of the double bill is set for a 12:00 pm start. 

Game 1 Recap

Following behind 2-0 after the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs unloaded for 11 runs in the bottom of the inning.  Sophomore infielder Anna Curran got the scoring started for the Bulldogs, crossing home on a passed ball after walking to lead-off.  Senior infielder, Uena Xharo, was walked home home to tie the game before freshman infielder Jessenia Garate slapped a two-RBI double scoring freshman outfielder Chanel Jemmot and senior infielder Nicole Boudouris.  Garate would cross home on an RBI single hit by freshman outfielder Viviana Torres to give BC a 6-2 lead.  The Bulldogs continued to pour it on in the first, capitalizing on eight bases on balls for the inning.  Jemmott would give BC a 10-2 lead with a two-RBI single driving home senior infielder Breanna Maresca and Xharo.  

The Patriots cut the Bulldog lead to 11-7, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning.  Brooklyn added another run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single hit by Curran, scoring Estime.  

After BC kept the Patriots scoreless in the top of the third, the Bulldogs blew the game wide open with another 11-run inning.  The highlight of the rally was sophomore outfielder Leslie Lima's grand slam homer. 

UVF scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Bulldogs kept the Patriots scoreless in the top of the fifth to take their first win of the season in five.  

Maresca was 3-3 with a double and scored three runs.  Curran was 2-3 with two RBI.  Garate and Jemmott each finished with four RBI for the game.  Lima finished with a game-high five RBI and scored three runs.  Xharo picked up her first win of the season to move to 1-4, throwing all five innings, yielding nine hits, charged with five earned runs while striking out three batters and walking two.  

Game 2 Recap

Brooklyn would jump out to a 5-2 lead through the first three innings of play.  The Bulldogs scored three runs in bottom of the third inning, playing heads-up softball.  Garate added two more RBI to her line for the night on a single driving home Boudouris and Xharo, giving BC the 4-2.  Garate would eventually score from third on a wild pitch.  

The Patriots tied the game, scoring three unanswered runs the next two innings.  UVF took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs.  The Bulldogs did not go away, cutting the Patriot lead to 9-8, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  After Lima scored on a Xharo RBI ground-out, Maresca doubled, scoring Curran.  Maresca would eventually score on a RBI single hit by Bourdouris.  

Valley Forge added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.  With BC down to its final out of the game, Estime would keep the Bulldogs chances alive with a double that advanced Torres to third.  However, the Patriots were able to get out of the late jam on a ground-out to the pitcher.  

Maresca would go 2-3 with a double and a triple.  Bourdouris went 2-4 with a pair of singles.
