Brooklyn, NY----The Brooklyn College men's volleyball team swept its second non-conference match in a row over St. Joseph's College Brooklyn tonight, 3-0 (27-25, 25-16, 28-26) to start the 2019 Season. St. Joe's drops to 0-5 with the loss on the road. The Bulldogs continue their homestand on Thursday, January 31, in a non-conference match against conference opponent, Medgar Evers. Opening serve is set for 7:00 pm at the West Center.
How It Happened
-On the brink of dropping its first set of the season trailing the Bears 26-25 in the third, the Bulldogs rallied for three scores to close out the match. Prior to the dramatic finish, the Bulldogs led 23-18 before St. Joe's rallied for six straight to take a 24-23. Senior setter,
Sayuj Zachariah, tied the set on the next point with an unassisted kill.
-The first set mirrored the third with Brooklyn jumping out to a comfortable early lead before the Bears made a late run to tie the set, 25-25. Following a St. Joe's service error, freshman middle hitter
Omar Rezika ended the set with a kill assisted by Zachariah.
-Brooklyn was the more efficient squad tonight with a .098 hitting percentage to the Bears' .072. However, the Bears had seven less errors on the evening.
-The Bulldogs finished with eight service aces to St. Joe's one for the match.
Leading the Bulldogs
-Zachariah led the way with a match-high 12 kills. He also set for 12 assists and served up three aces.
-Junior setter
Michael Valentin had another strong all-around performance finishing with seven kills and a team-high 17 assists.
-Junior libero,
Snigdho Hasan, led the team defensively with 15 digs.
Leading the Bears
-Sean Salomons finished with a team-high nine kills.
-Timothy Boyd had a match-high 21 assists.
-Dejon Cuffy-Rose finished with a match-high three blocks.
