Box Score 2 7HUNTER SPORTSPLEX New York, NY---Advancing to their first CUNYAC Championship since 1992, the Brooklyn College women's volleyball team pulled off a thrilling 3-2 (16-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-9) win over No. 2 seed Baruch in the semifinals before falling to No. 1 Hunter, 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-16) in the finals tonight. Hunter reached the final after defeating No. 4 seed CCNY in the first match of the day. Brooklyn closes out the tournament with a 16-14 overall record. Still eligible for postseason play, the Bulldogs will await their fate with announcements made on Monday.
On the brink of elimination trailing Baruch 2-0 and down 17-13 in the third game, the Bulldogs would complete an epic comeback beginning with a 5-0 run to take an 18-17 advantage. Brooklyn closed out the game with a seven-point rally after trailing the Bearcats 21-18. Freshman outside hitter,
Madison Cronk, ended the game with a kill. Cronk finished with 14 kills for the match.
The tide continued to turn in the fourth game as Brooklyn took a 17-13 lead thanks to a 5-0 run. Brooklyn forced the fifth and deciding set with three straight scores capped by a kill hammered by sophomore outside hitter,
Alejandra Chen. Both game winners were assisted by sophomore setter,
Ezri Shor, who finished with a match-high 41 assists.
With the momentum shift on their side, the Bulldogs rallied for four straight scores to take a 10-5 in the final game. Chen would end the match with a kill assisted by Shor.
Brooklyn freshman opposite and 2019 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Ashley led the Bulldogs with 17 kills. She also came up with 14 digs. Junior middle,
Rain Zhang, finished with four blocks. Shor and junior libero,
Yana Shaposhnikova, finished with 16 digs a piece.
With the Bulldogs drained from the match they had just finished, Hunter took advantage jumping out to an 11-3 lead in the opening game. The host continued to roll to take the first game.
Displaying their resilience in the semifinals, Brooklyn showed some flashes in the second game making a late run to cut HC's lead to 24-19 down the stretch. However, Hunter was able to close out the game with a kill.
The Bulldogs didn't go down without a fight, hanging right in with the Hawks in the early stages of the third game. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Hawks were able to build their lead with methodical three-point rallies and win their sixth straight conference title.
Hunter hit .349 to BC's .052. The Hawks were led by Kylie Hurst's 12 kills. Isabelle Lawrence put away 10 kills in the championship win. Justine Smith set for a match-high 25 assists.
Brooklyn was paced by Fung's team-high 12 kills. Chen added five kills. Shaposhnikova had 12 kills in the title match defeat.
