Jersey City, NJ---The Brooklyn College men's volleyball team swept its first tri-match of the season, defeating New Jersey City University, 3-2 (14-25, 26-24, 26-24, 20-25, 15-10) in the first match of the day and pulled out another close win over the College of St. Elizabeth (22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 15-7). Brooklyn improves to 9-11 with the non-conference victories. The Bulldogs return to CUNYAC play at Lehman College on Tuesday, March 26.
How It Happened (vs. NJCU)
-After falling by 11 in the first set, the Bulldogs looked like a new team in the second. Trailing 23-21, the Bulldogs were able to tie the match on back-to-back NJCU errors. With NJCU leading 24-23 and in position to take full control of the match, the Bulldogs rallied for three straight scores sparked by an attack denied by junior middle blocker,
Gabriel Pjatak.
-The Bulldogs' momentum continued in the third set as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead. NJCU battled back to tie the set at 24 before the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead on a kill put away by junior setter,
Michael Valentin, and an ace served up by Pjatak.
-NJCU would force a fifth and final set after a convincing win in the fourth. With the fifth set tied, 7-7, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run before eventually closing out the match on a NJCU service error.
-Pjatak put away a team-high 14 kills and four service aces.
-Freshman middle hitter,
Omar Rezika, put away nine kills.
-Brooklyn finished with 10 team blocks to the Gothic Knights' six.
How It Happened (vs. St. Elizabeth)
-After dropping a close set in the first, the Bulldogs rolled in the second set beginning with a three-score rally. The Bulldogs closed out the second set with three straight scores ending with a Pjatak ace.
-With BC leading 24-19 in the third set, CSE didn't lay down, rallying late to cut the Bulldog lead to 24-23. However, Brooklyn took a 2-1 match lead on an Eagle attack error.
-The fourth set mirrored the first with CSE taking control towards the middle of the set and holding on for a slim victory, forcing a deciding set. Brooklyn jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the fifth. CSE responded with four straight its own. Already leading 12-7, the Bulldogs won the match on three straight scores capped by a Pjatak service ace.
-Pjatak led the way with a match-high 18 kills.
-Rezika added 16 kills, three blocks, and three service aces.
-Brooklyn finished with 17 service aces to CSE's seven.
