Jamaica, NY---The Brooklyn College women's volleyball team moved to 3-1 in conference play after picking up a split at a conference trimatch hosted by York College. BC fell to conference leader, Hunter, 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 28-30, 22-25), in their first match of the day before rolling to a 3-0 (25-6, 25-10, 25-12) win over York in the final match of the afternoon. Brooklyn moves to 10-8 overall with the split.
Brooklyn cruised from the start against York in a match where the entire team produced for the convincing victory. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-1 match in the opening set with the Cardinals and never looked back.
BC finished with a .367 hitting percentage to York's -.264 for the match. Brooklyn outside hitter,
Alejandra Chen, led the way with a match-high 8 kills on 11 attacks. Sophomore setter,
Katia Mercado, finished with a match-high in assists (24) and service aces (5).
In their first match of the day against Hunter, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start, falling behind 4-0 in the opening set. However, the Bulldogs came alive in the second set to tie the match 1-1, thanks in part to a four-point rally giving the Bulldogs a 12-7 advantage halfway through the set. The teams would then battle through a marathon third set where the Bulldogs were leading 28-27, but the Hawks strung together a three-score rally at the right time to take a 2-1 advantage through three. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the fourth set before Hunter clawed their way back and took a 17-16 lead following a 7-1 rally. Hunter closed out the match with back-to-back scores after a valiant effort put out by the Bulldogs.
BC outside hitter,
Ashley Fung, led the way offensively with a match-high 17 kills. Junior setter,
Ezri Shor, had team-high in assists (37) and digs (20). Hunter's Mariam Outtara led the Hawks with 14 kills and 8 blocks.
