Brooklyn, NY----In a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament Second Round game, the Brooklyn College women's basketball team gave No. 11 Smith College all that they could handle, but eventually fell at home, 88-78, on Saturday. BC moves to 3-6 with the non-conference loss while the Pioneers improve to 7-1. Next Up: BC continues their non-conference slate at home on Tuesday against William Paterson at 6pm.
The Rundown
- Trailing 77-66 with 5:12 to go in regulation, the Bulldogs made it two possession game thanks to a 6-0 run following a made layup finished by senior guard, Nancy Pham, with a little over two minutes to play. The visitors kicked the lead back up to 9 following a three-point make with a little over a minute to go. BC cut the Smith lead to as few as six with 15 seconds remaining, but the Pioneers were able to seal the contest at the charity stripe in the final seconds.
- Brooklyn trailed by as many as 15 points early in the third quarter before Brooklyn made up some distance, cutting the deficit to 65-58 on a Gianna three to close out the quarter.
- BC senior forward, Sarah James, opened the contest with back-to-back three-point makes. Brooklyn would go toe-to-toe with Smith through the majority of the opening quarter, taking a 13-12 lead following James' third three of the quarter at the 3:33 mark.
- Smith would take a 28-15 lead with 8:39 to go in the first half. However, the Bulldogs didn't fold and went on an 11-1 run orchestrated by Gotti to cut the deficit to 29-26 with 4:22 remaining in the half. The Pioneers responded with a 10-0 run of their own and go on to lead 42-31 at the half.
- The Pioneers out-rebounded Brooklyn 18-8 on the offensive boards, finishing with 30 second chance points.
Leading the Bulldogs
- Gotti and Ericka James combined for 52 points on the afternoon with Gotti scoring a game-high 28. James shot 8-15 from the field in her 24-point performance. Gotti also dished out 7 assists, grabbed 6 rebounds, and came up with 5 steals.
- Sarah James and sophomore forward, Aleah Rafat, both buried three three-pointers for 9 points each on the day.
Leading Smith
- Morgan Morrison scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high 13 boards.
- Katelyn Pickunka scored 18 points including the 1,000th of her career on the game's opening bucket.
- Ally Yamada came off of the bench to finish with 18 points while shooting 6-10 from behind the arc.
