Bronx, NY---Despite a pair of conference games that could have gone either way, the Brooklyn College softball got the short-end in both of a double bill at Lehman College on Monday. The home team was able to hold off Brooklyn in the first game, 10-8, before putting a halt to a late BC rally in the second game, 13-10. BC drops to 2-10 overall and 0-6 in CUNYAC with the losses while the Lightning improves to 4-4 and 2-2. The Bulldogs will look to bounce back against John Jay on Wednesday in another CUNYAC doubleheader being played at Brooklyn College Field beginning at 4pm.
Brooklyn jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in Game 1 on a walk and a batter hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Lightning would take the lead for good in the bottom of the second thanks to a four-run rally. Brooklyn cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the fourth thanks in part to a RBI double hit down the left field line by Stella Wikowski that scored Crytal Alvarado who walked to lead off the inning. Witkowski would eventually score after stealing third and taking home on a failed pick-off attempt. Lehman responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Witkowski scored another run in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout slapped by
Zoey Van Vleet. Trailing 10-5, the Bulldogs made one last stand in the top of the seventh inning, which started with a double crushed by freshman pitcher,
Danielle Guzzardi. With one out,
Monica Prado Capon hit an RBI single, scoring Guzzardi. Witkowski would add to her standout performance with a 2-RBI double, scoring Alvarado and
Mariama Sano, but Prado Capon would be called out at home. Witkowski went 2-3 for the game with two doubles and scored three runs. Samantha Nazar earned the win for Lehman finishing with 13 strikeouts.
Leading 7-1 through an inning and a half in Game 2, the Lightning scored 10 runs in the bottom of the second to retake the lead for good. Brooklyn would give Lehman another late three-run scare in the top of the sixth inning highlighted by a 2-RBI double hit by Guzzardi. However, the Lightning would get the next two outs to survive with the final score. Witkowski went 2-3 with a triple and scored three Bulldog runs. Guzzardi also went 2-3 with a double, had three RBI, and pitched all seven innings finishing with nine strikeouts.
Chanel Jemmott also went 2-3 and drove in a run for Brooklyn. Nazar picked up her second win of the afternoon, going five-plus innings while striking out nine batters.
