Bulldogs Split at Battle of Brooklyn Trimatch

PRATT INSTITUTE (Brooklyn, NY)---Playing in their first of back-to-back trimatches this weekend, the Brooklyn College women's volleyball team pulled out split in 'Battle of Brooklyn' schools on Saturday at Pratt Institute.  In their first match of the afternoon, the Bulldogs cruised to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-20) win over St. Joseph's Brooklyn before falling to host, Pratt, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-15, 25-24).  BC moves to 5-7 overall with the non-conference split.

  • The Bulldogs are right back it tomorrow, October 1, as they travel south to Rutgers-Camden for a non-conference trimatch against Immaculata at 1pm followed by the host at 3pm.

How It Happened (vs. St. Joseph's Brooklyn)
  • Brooklyn jumped out to an 8-1 lead to start their afternoon highlighted by back-to-back kills put away by freshman middle, Olivia Fan.
  • Leading 10-9 early in the second set, BC went on a 12-0 run sparked by back-to-back kills hammered away by junior outside hitter, Aleah Rafat
  • Clinging to a 20-18 lead down the stretch of the third set, Brooklyn created the buffer they needed in order to close out the match with a three-score rally capped by a Fan kill. 
  • BC served up 16 aces to the Bears' five for the match. 
For the Bulldogs (vs. Joseph's Brooklyn)
  • Rafat led the way with a match-high 11 kills. Defensively, she came up with 8 digs. 
  • Fan finished with a BC career-high 7 kills to go along with a match-high 5 blocks.
  • Sophomore libero, Ruti Joshi, served up a match-high 7 aces. 
How It Happened (vs. Pratt)
  • Played evenly halfway through the opening set, the home team scored three unanswered points at the right time to take an 18-13 advantage.  Pratt would keep the Bulldogs at bay the rest of the set for a 1-0 lead in the match. 
  • With score tied, 17-17, Brooklyn made their move beginning with a three-score rally highlighted by a Raft kill and service ace.  The Bulldogs would keep the lead the rest of the way to tie the match. 
  • Pratt responded in the third set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead and controlling the pace for a 2-1 lead in the match. 
  • The teams battled back-and-forth through the fourth set with neither squad leading by more than three points the entire set.  Trailing 23-22, Brooklyn scored back-to-back points with a chance to force a deciding set.  However, the Cannoneers would benefit from a pair of Bulldog errors and ended the match on a kill. 
  • Brooklyn was the better team at the service line for the match, finishing with a 14-11 edge in aces. 
  • Pratt controlled play at the, finishing with 12 blocks to the Bulldogs' three. 
For the Bulldogs (vs. Pratt)
  • Rafat added 11 more kills to her day as well as 9 digs. 
  • Senior outside hitter, Ashley Fung, added 9 kills.
