Bulldogs Pull Out 3-2 Conference Win Over Lehman at Home in Five-Set Thriller

BROOKLYN, NY---Trailing two sets to one, the Brooklyn College women's volleyball team rallied to win the next three sets to pull out a dramatic 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-13, 15-4) conference victory over Lehman College at the West Quad Center on Thursday night.  Brooklyn improves to 12-9 and 4-1 in CUINYAC with the win while the Lightning drops to 5-12 and 2-3 respectively.

How It Happened

The first set would set the tone for the whole game, featuring a total of 12 tied scores in the process, a completely different game from their first encounter earlier this year. With Brooklyn up 20-19, Lehman would proceed to go on a 5-0 run that would put them on the verge of taking set number one, eventually winning 25-21.

The shock and momentum of the first set would carry on into second set, allowing the Lightning to take an early lead. However, the Bulldogs would climb back into it, going on a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set at 18-16.

Although Lehman tried to get back in it tying it a few times afterwards, they could never retake the lead, as Brooklyn would end the set on a 4-0 run to hold on to take it 25-20.

The third set would have the Bulldogs trailing and playing a game of catch up, coming in as close as 22-20, but the Lightning would break that run to end the set on a 3-0 for the 25-20 score.

If there was anytime the crowd played a huge part it was in the fourth set, as the Brooklyn supporters would reawaken, cheering, rallying, and hoping for a comeback. With the score tied 3-3, Brooklyn's Ruti Joshi would serve 3 of her aces during the span that would spark a 7-0 run.

The Lightning would try and get back in it with a 5-0 run of their own, but the Bulldogs would not allow it. The Bulldogs would end up outscoring the Lightning 9-1 to go up 19-9, fueled by the crowd's involvement and kills from Aleah Rafat via Amra Mulic, eventually sending it to a fifth and deciding set after a 25-13 fourth set.

Lehman would start of the fifth set up 2-0, and just when it looked like the pattern of sets would continue and the comeback would come up short, Brooklyn would go on a series of 4-0 and 8-0 runs, capped off by aces from Joshi in the most crucial moments to go up 12-3, eventually taking it all in dramatic fashion 15-4.

For the Bulldogs

  • Aleah Rafat would lead in two categories with 16 kills and 30 digs, as well as 2 assists, 3 aces, 2 blocks, and 3 receptions.
  • Ruti Joshi would lead the way with 8 service aces that would ignite the rally, as well as 3 receptions, 6 assists, and 29 digs.
  • Amra Mulic would lead the way setting up for 16 assists, 13 digs, and 2 kills.
  • 7 different Bulldogs would have at least 2 blocks in this game, as Kela Duncan would lead that category with 7 total blocks, 3 solo and 4 assisted.
Next Up: Brooklyn takes a break from conference play with a non-conference trimatch at Alvernia on Saturday, taking on Rutgers-Newark at 1pm followed by the host at 3pm.
