BC Men's Soccer Wins In Shootout Over John Jay in CUNYAC Quarterfinals

Solis Saves Two, Jeronimo Buries One, and the Bulldogs Advance to CUNYAC Semifinals

BROOKLYN, New York ----- Coming into Wednesday's CUNYAC Quarterfinals matchup, the Brooklyn College men's soccer team would host a very familiar opponent in the number five-ranked John Jay College Bloodhounds. Though it seemed that these two teams would play on forever with how evenly matched they were, ultimately, the Bulldogs would advance to the CUNYAC Semifinals after a penalty shootout by a score of 4-2.

How It Happened

Brooklyn would start to try and get on the board early on with a low shot from Adan Khodorkovsky, who may not have been in the initial lineup but would be crucial in this game since 5'.

Bruno Servisi would have a similar opportunity with a similar result with a shot to the bottom center that was saved in 10'

The Bulldogs may have had a couple of shots at scoring in the first half, but none closer than a shot from Seif Mokhtar that would hit the right woodwork in 17'.

Brian Perea would also be busy on his side of the goal, making saves in different directions including top right in 20', bottom left in 22', and one in the top left in 26'.

Khodorkovsky and Servisi would both have shots to the bottom right that were turned away in 18' and 24' respectively, but the score remained at 0-0 into halftime.

The second half of regulation would be relatively quiet for the most part, with numerous blocked shots and a few wide or high, that is until the last few minutes of regulation. Perea would be forced to come up big to keep the score clean by saving a shot down the bottom center off a free kick from thirty yards out in 83'.

George Koufos would have one last chance before the end of regulation, striking the ball potently into the bottom left corner, but the score would remain 0-0 in 88', forcing the game to go to overtime.

In the overtime periods, both teams would struggle to get off a shot on target, with headers going high and shots going wide of the goal on either side, including one shot by Koufos that went up too high with too much power in 103'.

John Jay would win the coin toss, electing to kick first and away from the loudest part of the crowd, taking an early 1-0 lead.

As the Bloodhound crowd began to taunt him, Bradlej Cupi would maintain his composure to tie it 1-1.

Brooklyn elected to make a substitution at the goalkeeper position right before the end of overtime, inserting Juan Carlos Solis into a pivotal role in this game right off the bench. Although that would seem like a risky, unlikely, and even puzzling movie, Coach Flores' decision seemed to pay off as Solis would stop a guaranteed goal in the bottom left corner from John Jay's Brayan Morales to keep it 1-1.

That save proved to be the defining moment of the game, shifting momentum in the Bulldogs' favor. With the score now 3-2 in favor of Brooklyn, Maksym Ivanov would step up for the Bloodhounds, only to be stopped once again by Solis with another diving save.

With Brooklyn's ticket to the semifinals on the line, Coach Flores turned to the young midfielder, Eduardo Jeronimo in such a high-pressure situation. Although to others it may have seen crazy, it paid off once again as Jeronimo would bury it deep into the unreachable area to the left side of the goalkeeper to win it 4-2, sending everybody into a frenzy. From the children about to practice to the Brooklyn bench to the spectators from all over campus, it seemed like the perfect ending to the longest game of the season.

For the Bulldogs

  • Both Adan Khodorkovsky and Bruno Servisi would end up with 2 shots, both on target for the game.
  • George Koufos would end the game with 3 shots, with 1 on target.
  • Emir Imamberdiev would lead in the category of shots taken, but would have all 4 of his shots blocked in the game.
  • Brian Perea would save 4 shots in regulation, keeping a clean sheet even through overtime.
  • Juan Carlos Solis would be the hero that changed the momentum so Brooklyn could move on, saving 2 penalty shots in the shootout.
  • Eduardo Jeronimo would defy the pressure to put away the winning penalty shot, playing 27 minutes of action, his most of the season.

Up next, the Brooklyn College men's soccer team travel to The Bronx, New York to face off against the Lehman College Lightning on Saturday, Novemeber 2nd at a time to be announced.
