Brooklyn, NY----Needing a victory to lock up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Championship Tournament, the Brooklyn College women's volleyball team came through in the clutch, rolling to a 3-0 sweep of Baruch in conference play at the West Quad Center on Tuesday. Prior to the match, senior outside hitters,
Aleah Rafat and
Sydney Gdanski, were recognized. Brooklyn improves to 13-13 overall and 5-2 in CUNYAC with the victory while the Bearcats drops to 7-15 and 2-4 respectively. Next Up: Brooklyn will await their opponent for the CUNYAC quarterfinals hosted by the Bulldogs on Tuesday, 11/12, at a time to be announced.
How It Happened
- Brooklyn came to play from the opening serve, jumping out to an 8-2 lead in the first set highlighted by kills put away by Olivia Fan and Kela Duncan. Leading 15-12, the Bulldogs created more separation with a six-score rally that included a pair of Rafat kills. The Bearcats threatened late, but the Bulldogs took the first set on a Baruch error, 25-18.
- Baruch would go up 2-0 to start the second set before Brooklyn responded with a five-point swing highlighted by a pair of Rafat kills and a Dinora Gomez service ace. With the score deadlocked, 11-11, the Bulldogs made their move beginning with a six-point rally sparked by a kill put away by Emma Steele. Brooklyn scored the last two points of the set that included a Rafat kill to win, 25-20.
- Taking a 6-4 lead after trailing early in the third set, Brooklyn took full control beginning with a five-score rally sparked by a Danielle Fuxman kill. Leading 20-16, Brooklyn scored five of the last six points of the match that included two more Rafat kills. BC sophomore, Magdalena Mackiewicz, also contributed a kill in the late flurry.
- Brooklyn hit .225 to the Bearcats' .036 for the match.
- The Bulldogs were also the superior team at the net on the night finishing with seven blocks to the Bearcats' pair.
For the Bulldogs
- Rafat led the way with a match-high 14 kills and 11 digs. She now only needs four kills to reach 1,000 for her career.
- Fuxman added 6 kills to go along with four blocks (three solo).
- Junior libero, Ruti Joshi, came up with 17 digs and served up a match-high 5 aces.
