BC Men's Basketball Falls In Final Seconds of Season Opener to NJCU

Bulldogs Can't Put Away Shot As Knights Stab Them In the Heart

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey ------ Coming into Saturday evening's season opener, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team would begin their campaign on the road against the New Jersey City University Knights. Up to this point, both teams had won three games a piece, and the Bulldogs have had two of those victories on the road. Both sides were evenly matched historically, a statement that would carry on into the whole game. Unfortunately, history would not matter, as Brooklyn would lose an absolute heartbreaker in the final seconds of regulation by the narrow margin of 61-59.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (0-1) start off with a tough loss that they need to shake off as soon as possible, while the New Jersey City Knights (1-0) win in a way that could be a motivating way to start off the season.

How It Happened

New Jersey City would come out looking to make a statement, going on a 7-0 run in the first two minutes of action. Brooklyn would finally score their first basket two minutes and twenty seconds into the game, as Stephon McGill would score a layup after getting fouled to make it 7-2.

With the score now 20-9 in favor of the Knights, the Bulldogs would find a catalyst for the offense off the bench, as Randolph Charles would score a jumper on the fast break off a steal by Joe Charles. Randolph would score 9 of the next 14 points, getting the Bulldogs within four at the half, trailing by a score of 27-23.

Despite New Jersey City striking first at the free throw line to increase their lead to five, Brooklyn would find scoring from a renewed Jaden Casanova, who would score back-to-back shots, a jumper and layup, to pull Brooklyn within one less than a minute into the second half at 28-27.

Stephon McGill would finally tie the game up for the first time with a layup inside the paint to make it 30-30 with 16:00 remaining and scoring the next six points for the Bulldogs.

Trailing by one after a layup inside the paint, Malik Dale would give Brooklyn the first lead of the evening with a three-pointer, giving them a 38-36 lead. New Jersey City would tie it at the free throw line, but ironically enough, Brooklyn would take the lead back the same way as Dale would make all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point shot, making it 41-38.

Randolph would give the Bulldogs their largest lead of 6, before the Knights would go on a 9-0 run to retake the lead with 8:23 remaining in the second half. However, it seemed that anytime the Knights would pull away, the Bulldogs would be right there.

With 0:37 remaining in the game, Dale would tie the score once again with a defiant three-pointer to put the game at 59-59, leaving 34 seconds left on the game clock.

With plenty of time left, New Jersey City would get to the paint to hit a small jumper with 0:14 to go in the game to make it 61-59.

Brooklyn would have one last possession to try and send it to overtime. As time was winding down Dale would go for the game-winner, missing the three-pointer in the process, and with just one-second remaining, McGill would get the offensive rebound, taking one last good look, but missing the quick jumper to lose in heartbreaking fashion to open up the season by a score of 61-59.

For the Bulldogs

  • Malik Dale would lead the way with 14 points, going 4-for-11 from the field, 3-for-9 from three, and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line, while grabbing 1 rebound and 1 assist.
  • Stephon McGill would have 10 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal as a starter while going 4-for-10 from the field and 2-for-6 from the free throw line.
  • Joe Charles would go 4-for-5 from deep, scoring 12 points, grabbing 1 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals.
  • Randolph Charles would shoot 80% overall and 3-for-4 from the free throw line, finishing with 11 points, 1 assist, and 1 rebound.

Up next, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team look to move on from the loss, as they come home to West Quad Center Gymnasium on Wednesday, November 13th at 7:15pm to face the Kean University Cougars.
