No. 1 Bulldogs Hold Off No. 4 Hunter in CUNYAC Semifinals, Head to Ninth Straight Conference Final

Brooklyn, NY---Trailing the majority of the game, Brooklyn College outscored Hunter College, 23-14, in the fourth quarter en route to a 65-59 victory in the semifinals of the CUNYAC Championship Tournament at the West Quad Gymnasium on Tuesday.  The top-seeded Bulldogs advance to their ninth straight conference championship game, moving to 17-8 with the while, while No. 4 Hunter exits the tournament with a 15-12 mark.  

Next Up: Brooklyn will take on No. 2 John Jay in the third straight installment of the match-up in the conference final at Baruch College on Friday at 5:30 pm.  

How It Happened:
  • With the Bulldogs trailing 51-48, BC senior guard, Alina Estrella, finished a 360-degree and-one layup on the break to cut the Hunter lead to a point with 5:32 to go in the contest.  Unable to complete the three-point play, Brooklyn would then taking the lead on their next possession on a fastbreak layup finished by sophomore guard, Dior Dorsey, giving BC their first lead of the game with 5:01 to go.  The Bulldogs would extend their run to 8-0, taking a 56-51 lead with a little over three minutes to go in regulation. Brooklyn would go on to lead by as many as seven points in the final two minutes of play before icing the game at the free throw line after Hunter cut the advantage to three points with :48 to go.  
  • Brooklyn stayed within striking distance the entire third quarter, not allowing the Hawks to grab more than a two-possession lead.  
  • The Bulldogs found themselves in a nine-point hole late in the first half before closing out the final 1:16 with a 7-0 run sparked by a three-point make from sophomore guard, Anna Kitch, and finished by a fast-break lay-in by Estrella in the final seconds, to only trail 32-30 by halftime.  
  • BC's full-court pressure eventually got to the Hawks as the Bulldogs scored 15 points off of Hunter's 22 turnovers. Brooklyn also owned the offensive boards, grabbing 24 extra chances to HC's 12. 
For the Bulldogs
  • Senior guard, Ericka James scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds.  
  • Dorsey was instrumental in keeping the Bulldogs close all game and fourth quarter run, finishing with 17 points, five rebounds,and four steals off of the bench.
  • Estrella had a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  
  • Senior forward, Sarah James, chipped in 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
