BC Able to Put Away Lehman in a Grueling Five-Sets

BROOKLYN, New York ---- Coming into Tuesday night's conference game, the Brooklyn College men's volleyball team looked to defend their home court against the Lehman College Lightning after a heartbreaking loss against another conference rival last Saturday in five sets. Tonight's game had it all from lead changes, ties, emotions, facial expressions, and passion. Despite the tough losses this season that would occur after five sets, this time it was different as the Brooklyn College Bulldogs were able to put away the Lehman College Lightning in a grueling five sets (25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12) Brooklyn College improves to 4-6 in the conference and an 8-13 overall record, while Lehman College drops to 4-5 in the conference and 7-11 overall.

The Brooklyn College men's volleyball team will travel to Harlem, New York to take on another conference opponent, the City College of New York Beavers on Thursday, March 21 at 7pm

How It Happened:

  • Brooklyn started off hot right away going on exceptional 5-0 to start off the first set, eventually going up by as many as eleven, taking the lead and never looking back 25-19.
  • This time, it was Lehman that would have a very similar start to the second set going up 5-0.
  • Although Brooklyn would tie it up twice, including 22-22, Lehman would not surrender the lead and take it 25-23.
  • The third set felt like a winner-take-all with 9 ties, but it was the Bulldogs' Aziz Abdusamiev who would come alive with a key block, kill, and serve that would set up taking it 25-21.
  • The fourth set would have Brooklyn leading most of it, but Lehman would rally back to tie it 20-20, and eventually taking the lead 23-20. Despite Brooklyn's effort, they would come up short 25-23, leading to a deciding fifth and final set.
  • With the fifth set tied 4-4, the Bulldogs' Omar Shawki would provide a spark out of nowhere with two key kills, building momentum for Jiaian Flanders to put it away 15-12.

For the Bulldogs:

  • Aaron Siu led the way once again with 28 kills, 20 digs, 3 service aces and 1 assist.
  • Tommy Min had a solid game with 10 kills, 14 digs, 2 block assists, and 1 assist.
  • Jiaian Flanders bought in all the energy, providing 16 kills, 2 block assists, 1 block and 10 digs.
  • Aziz Abdusamiev was impactful on both sides of the ball with 9 kills, 1 assist, 1 service ace, 4 digs and a leading 5 blocks.
  • David Lema had every other assist not mentioned with 61 assists to go with 2 kills, 11 digs, and 1 service ace.
  • Ali Zandani led in the category for digs with 24 to go with 1 reception and 1 assist.
