BC Wins Both At Home on Opening Day Against Valley Forge

BROOKLYN, New York ---- Coming into the first doubleheader of the season on Friday evening, the Brooklyn College softball team looked to start off on the right foot. Overcoming an early 3-0 deficit, the Brooklyn College Bulldogs were able to come back and take Game 1 of a non-conference doubleheader with a 13-5 victory over the University of Valley Forge Patriots. They would then proceed to take Game 2 as well in a 10-3 victory to start off the year 2-0, while the visiting team would start off 0-2.

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third, a series of wild pitches would put the Bulldogs in scoring position and allow them to come back and tie the game 3-3.
  • After a scoreless second inning, Brooklyn's Zoey Van Vleet would bring Melanie Millan home to break the tie and take a 4-3 lead that would kick off a 6-run inning.
  • With the Patriots attempting to come back into the game with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs' Grismarly Mejia Brito would hit a 2 RBI single to extend the score 11-5.
  • Up 12-5 after an RBI single by the Bulldogs' Dasha Goodman in the fifth and needing one more run to end the game, Nadeen Khalil would hit an inside the ballpark home run to walkoff with the win 13-5.

For the Bulldogs (Game 1)

  • Right fielder Grismarly Brito Mejia had 3 RBIs to lead a Bulldogs to go along with 1 run and going 2-for-4 for the game.
  • Third baseman Zoey Van Vleet would score 3 runs, 1 RBI on 2-for-3 hitting.
  • Left fielder Nadeen Khalil had 1 run on 1-for-3 hitting and 2 RBIs, including the home run to win the game.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • Brooklyn would start off on fire jumping to a 6-0 start, scoring 2 in the first and 4 in the second inning.
  • After the Patriots broke the shutout in the top of the third, the Bulldogs would score 4 more runs in the third inning thanks to a couple of errors to make it 10-1.
  • Valley Forge would attempt to inch closer, but it was not enough as Brooklyn would take a 10-3 victory.

For the Bulldogs (Game 2)

  • Leadoff hitter and center fielder Paige Palacios would hit 2-for-4 with 3 runs and 1 RBI.
  • Third baseman Zoey Van Vleet hit 2-for-4 as well with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.
  • Catcher Vida Rodriguez had an efficient hitting night going 2-for-3 with 1 RBI.
