Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Rutgers-Newark on Friday at Brooklyn College Field. BC fell in Game 1, 7-2, before losing in the nightcap, 12-2, in five innings. Brooklyn moves to 3-5 overall in defeat while the Scarlet Raiders picked up their first two victories on the year to improve to 2-10. Next Up: Brooklyn continues their homestand on Wednesday as they host St. Joseph's Brooklyn in a non-conference twin bill beginning at 5pm.
Rutgers--Newark scored first in the top of the second inning on a RBI single hit by Jessi Boyce. The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Brooklyn error.
BC answered in the bottom of the third inning on a run driven in by
Zoey Van Vleet to score
Paige Palacios who reached base earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice.
After adding a run in the fifth inning, the visitors scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning crack the game open thanks in part to a two-run in the park homer and a solo home run.
Brooklyn rallied in the bottom of the seventh with
Emilyah Jefferson scoring the final run of the game on a RBI single hit by
Nadeen Khalil.
Khalil went 2-3 in Game 1.
Danielle Guzzardi pitched all seven innings, struck out a pair of batters, and would be charged with five earned runs.
The Scarlet Raiders' bats were on fire in Game 2 of the doubleheader as Rutgers-Newark unloaded for 15 hits for the game. After the visitors scored three runs in the first inning, the Bulldogs got on the board on a
Zoey Van Vleet pop-up that scored Palacios. The pair would help the Bulldogs score their final run of the game in similar fashion to cut the RUN lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third inning. However, the Scarlet Raiders responded in a big way in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs before tacking on three runs in the top of the fifth.
Dasha Goodman went 2-2 in Game 2. Palacios was 1-2 and scored both of BC's runs. Guzzardi pitched all five innings with a strikeout and was charged with seven runs.
