BC Softball Vanquishes York in Two for One Special

Bulldogs finally win away from home and gain their first pair of conference victories

BELLEROSE, New York ------ Coming into Friday night's conference game, both the Brooklyn College softball team and the York College Cardinals looked for their first conference victory to attempt an ascension into the CUNYAC standings. The Bulldogs came into the Padavan-Preller Fields struggling to get any sort of offense going on the road, only attaining eight hits in those four games and scoring just two runs in the process. A historically favorable opponent was exactly what the doctor would have ordered to cure the problems on the batting end. The Bulldogs would respond accordingly, taking both games by scores of 11-1 and making quick work of the Cardinals in five innings.

The York College Cardinals (4-12) continue to seek their first conference victory as they drop down to 0-6. The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (7-13) improve to 2-4, a record that ironically represents both away games and CUNYAC play.

Game 1

Brooklyn would do a good chunk of damage starting in the first inning, as a sacrificial groundout to York's shortstop put them up 1-0 very early on.

With a runner being advanced to third, it was second baseman Isabelle Frank that would hit an RBI-single to left centerfield allowing the runner to score and make it 2-0. Frank would eventually come home off an RBI-single that went through the right side of the field to make it 3-0.

A sacrificial groundout to third base and a wild pitch would end up putting Brooklyn up 5-0 on a first inning rout.

The Bulldogs would tack on four more runs in the second inning, continuing to pour on the scoring early on, including adding another run for shortstop Melanie Millan to score and make it 9-0.

In the third inning, second baseman Isabelle Frank would once again hit an RBI-single through the right side to bring in her second RBI of the night. She would end the first game with 2 RBI, 1 run scored, with 1 stolen base and hitting 2-for-3.

Shortly after, Melanie Millan would strike again scoring yet another run off a fielder's choice to make it 11-0. She would end this game hitting 2-for-3 with 1 walk, 1 stolen base, and 3 runs scored.

York did not get a hit until the fourth inning, and they would not get a run until the fifth inning, which saw them avoiding a shutout to make it 11-1.

Game 2

The Bulldogs had momentum going into the second game of the doubleheader, and they did not look back going into the top of the first inning. Picking up where she left off, third baseman Paige Palacios would steal second base to put herself into scoring position. After a passed ball allowed her to get to third, a sacrificial groundout would put the Bulldogs up 1-0.

An RBI-single from first baseman Zoey Van Vleet to center field would allow the second run to score.

Left fielder Nadeen Khalil would bring in her most important hit of her night, batting two-run RBI-single up the middle to bring the score to 4-0. She would then continue to advance the bases as the inning advanced and eventually score off a throwing error to make it 6-0. She would end the night 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and 1 run scored.

In her second appearance of the inning, Paige Palacios would once again be a factor by hitting an RBI-single to left field to finally put an end to a 7-0 run in the first inning to start the game.

The top of the second inning featured two back-to-back RBI-singles, as Zoey Van Vleet would once again hit an RBI-single up the middle to make it 8-0, before the score would eventually go up to 9-0 a batter later.

A costly error from Brooklyn's third baseman allowed for two stolen bases, one to third but more importantly, one to home plate, to make it 9-1, finally putting York on the board and once again avoiding another shutout. Thankfully, unlike the first game that featured three errors for both sides, this was the Bulldogs only mishap.

As the night went on, it seemed as though Isabelle Frank's sacrifice fly to bring in another run and make it 10-1 in the top of the third inning was not the only sacrifice made. It almost as if the Cardinals were a lamb sacrificed to let the Bulldogs finally get two important wins in categories that were seemingly unattainable.

Zoey Van Vleet hit an RBI-single up the middle to make it 11-1 in the top of the third. Van Vleet would end the night 3-for-3 with 1 run scored and 3 RBI, in a night that only ended early due to the mercy rule.
