BC Women's Soccer Falters Against Bard

Bulldogs Get Torn By Raptors, But Hartje Has Heart

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY ------ Coming in Tuesday night's non-conference matchup, the Brooklyn College women's soccer team looked to get another positive or decent result on the road against their opponents, the Bard College Raptors. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs would suffer their largest defeat of the season, taking a 6-0 loss away from home.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (0-4-1) continue without a victory this season, while the Bard College Raptors (2-2-1) get a much-needed victory at home to even their record.

Brooklyn's goalie, April Hartje, would be tested very early on in the game, with three early saves coming in a span of five minutes, including a shot off a corner that was saved off the bottom left corner in 8'.

A few offsides later, Bard's Goldie Siff would hit a shot that would once again be saved by Hartje off the top of the goal in 22'.

With Bard finally breaking through in 23', Brooklyn needed to create a scoring opportunity. A corner kick would give them their first real chance, as Zasu Alvarez would launch a shot into the bottom right that was saved by Bard's goalie in 24'.

Hartje would get one more save down the bottom center in 30' before Bard would score two more goals, once in 32' and another in 40'. Sage Bernstein would shoot through the bottom center of the goal in a last attempt to score, but Brooklyn would still trail 3-0 at the half.

The second half started off just as intense with an early foul inside the box gave the Raptors another chance at scoring, only this time through a penalty in 51'. As the seconds began to tick and the referee blew the whistle, all the Bulldogs could do was hope for the best. Despite the score, Hartje would show some heart and made yet another spectacular save on a penalty shot that was almost guaranteed in 52'.

Despite that, the momentum would not change as Bard would take two consecutive shots, with the first one bouncing off the top woodwork in 55' and the second one hitting a defender on the way to a corner fifteen seconds later.

Eventually, the Raptors would score once again thanks to all the pressure on the Bulldogs' side of the field to make it 4-0 in 59'. Less than a minute later, Brooklyn would have their final clear chance to score, as Dionisia Payamps would shoot a clear shot to the bottom left of the goalposts, only to be stopped once again.

With the ball staying on the Brooklyn side for the most part, Hartje would once again be active with her hands, most notably in a quick sequence in 61'. Here she would save two consecutive shots, with one going down her bottom left and then having to dive for another on her bottom right less than thirty seconds later.

The Brooklyn defense would only be able to hold so much, as April Hartje would continue to have her work cut out for with saves in all directions. Although 6 goals were scored, Hartje would tally up 15 saves, as Brooklyn would face 34 shots as a team, with 21 on target.

The Brooklyn College women's soccer team comes back home to the Brooklyn College Athletic Field for another non-conference match against the Yeshiva University Maccabees on Thursday, September 19 at 5pm.
