Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Bulldogs Display Mettle, But Fall to Farmingdale State in Three

BROOKLYN, New York --- Despite a number of positives throughout the match, the Brooklyn College women's volleyball team dropped a three-set decision (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) to Farmingdale State at the West Quad Gymnasium on Tuesday.  Brooklyn moves to 5-7 overall with the non-conference loss while the Rams improve to 6-4.

Despite being down to Farmingdale State in the first set, Brooklyn would have a moment where it looked as though they could take the set, going on a 6-0 run to take a 14-12 lead, mostly thanks to Danielle Fuxman, who led the way in this set, ending with a Bulldogs leading 7 kills to go along with 2 block assists. However, after trading points, Farmingdale State would go on a 9-1 run of their own to retake the lead and eventually the set 25-18.

The second set started off promising for the Bulldogs, as Ayatallah Elkotby would get a clean solo block to start it off. Elkotby would lead the defense with 3 solo blocks, 2 block assists, 1 dig and 1 kill. However, as the Bulldogs held on to a two-point lead, the Rams would go on a scoring tear, outscoring the Bulldogs 16-3 in that span to take what looked like a lead that would end the set quickly at 19-7.

Just when the reception errors were piling on and the attack errors were not providing any points, it was an unlikely attacker that awoke the team in Amra Mulic, who is mostly known for being a setter and assist leader. This time, however, she would jump out from the backline and spike away a kill when everybody expected a set. She would proceed to get a service ace right after that, propelling the loud cheers of the crowd.

Even after another attack error looked to break the momentum, Mulic would get another kill, allowing Brooklyn to build momentum and go on a 9-1 run to get back in the game at 20-16. Mulic led the passing with 9 assists, while also attaining 2 kills, 3 aces, and 9 digs. Unfortunately, Farmingdale State would end the set on a 5-1 run of their own to take it 25-17.

The Bulldogs looked to turn things around, starting off strong with a lead, eventually growing that lead after trading a few points. Holding on to a one-point lead, the Bulldogs would go on a 6-0 run, which including the block that started it all, where the ball was attacked from the Rams side only for Kela Duncan to spike it back down. She would have another block shortly after, and a kill on the next play. The Bulldogs defense was strong during this run, as everybody seemed to be jumping to prevent the ball from falling on the Bulldogs' side, taking a 12-5 lead. Duncan would end with 2 kills, 2 solo blocks,1 block assist, and 1 dig.

Just when it looked like Brooklyn was in control, Farmingdale State came climbing back in, tying it and retaking the lead 17-16 after a 6-0 run. Although the Bulldogs would retake the lead after a pair of attack errors, Farmingdale State would go on another 4-0 run, going up 21-19. It was a pattern, for as Brooklyn would put up one, Farmingdale State would put up two, eventually taking the set 25-20.

Next Up: BC has a huge CUNYAC match at home against John Jay on Thursday, 9/26, at 6pm.
