Bulldogs Suffer First Conference Loss of Season to John Jay

BROOKLYN, New York --- The Brooklyn College women's volleyball team suffered their first conference loss at home to John Jay on Thursday, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-19).  BC moves to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in CUNYAC with the loss while the Bloodhounds improve to 8-5 and 1-1.  Next Up: The Bulldogs will have over a week to prepare for a trimatch at home on Saturday, October 5.

How It Happened

The Bulldogs would get off to a promising start at the beginning of the first set, going up by as much as seven, taking a 20-13 lead that left the Bloodhounds in disbelief. Coming off the timeout however, the Bloodhounds would go on a 12-0 run, an unexpected shift in momentum that carried them to take the first set from the Bulldogs from right under them 25-20.

John Jay would carry that momentum into the second set, before a kill from Amy Kaza off an assist from Ruti Joshi would break the 3-0 run. Brooklyn would eventually tie it up four times more, last knotting it up at 15-15. However, they would never retake the lead, getting as close as being down 20-19, where a crucial timeout by John Jay would allow them to build momentum once again to close it 25-19.

The Bloodhounds would once again carry that momentum into the third set, starting it with a 5-0 run and never looking back. The Bulldogs would get as close as 16-15, but another run by John Jay, which seemed to be the theme in this game, would help them create some distance 21-15, eventually taking the third set 25-19.

For the Bulldogs

  • Amy Kaza would have her best scoring game as of now this season, getting a season high 5 kills, second in the Bulldogs leaderboard, as well as 3 digs, totaling 5 points.
  • Ruti Joshi would make a ton of saves that kept the crowd in it, attaining 15 digs in the process to go along with 2 receptions, 5 assists, and 1 service ace.
  • Ayatallah Elkotby continues to shine on the defensive front of the net with 5 blocks for the game, while also getting 1 kill and 1 dig.
