BC Men's Soccer Home Opener Spoiled By Sarah Lawrence 1-0

One majestic Gryphons free kick enough despite Bulldogs good play.

BROOKLYN, New York ------- Coming into Tuesday night's home opener, the Brooklyn College men's soccer team came off a season opening victory on the road and were looking to continue their winning ways getting back home. Their opponents, the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons, have given them a competitive match each and every time, and it was no different this time around.

Unfortunately, once again, it was the Gryphons that would come up on top, giving the Bulldogs a close 1-0 loss. The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (1-1-0) get their first loss of the season, while the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (1-2-0) earn their first victory of their young season.

Although the first half of action showed a blank slate, the Bulldogs made sure to keep the Gryphons' goalie active, including a corner kick that nearly created a scoring opportunity for Brooklyn's Adan Khodorovsky that was saved by Sarah Lawrence's Jonah Zalis at the top of the goal in 9'.

However, the Bulldogs' best opportunity came when sophomore midfielder, George Koufos, found enough space to hit a quick, low shot to the bottom right of the goal that was once again saved by Zalis in the 11'. Koufos would end with two shots on goal on two shots taken.

The biggest scare of the first half would come right as it was wrapping up, as the Gryphons' Leon Bronshvag would kick a shot that would ricochet off the top woodwork in the 43'.

Early in the second half, it would be Bronshvag that would strike again, forcing Brooklyn's freshman goalkeeper, Brian Perea, to save a low shot on the left side in the 53'.

The turning would not happen until a few minutes later, where a yellow card given outside of the box would set up a direct free kick for Sarah Lawrence College. In what would be a quick set piece, the Gryphons' Dean Brown would hit a rocket to the top of the goal from thirty feet out at 61'.

The goal would not only spark three more yellow cards, but two more shots on goal from Brooklyn almost immediately after the Gryphons' Elijah Shohat would sub in at goalie, including a shot down the middle by Adam Moharam looking for redemption at 67' and another shot down the bottom center by Melvin Saeteros trying to find space for a play to happen in the 70'.

Sarah Lawrence's Asefa Thome would get another late opportunity to score, but Perea was able to react in time to dive for another save on the bottom left corner of the goal in the 89'. He would save 2 shots while only allowing a single goal to end the day.

The men's soccer team will stay at home to await the arrival of the College of Old Westbury in a non-conference match on Saturday, September 7th at 12:00pm.
