BC Women's Volleyball Falls to USMMA in Home Opener

Bulldogs Could Not Turn the Tide, Sunk By Mariners

BROOKLYN, New York----With a quick turnaround after winning their Season Opener on Tuesday night, the Brooklyn College women's volleyball wasn't able to make it two in a row, dropping a three-set decision to USMMA at home on Wednesday night.  The USMMA Mariners (1-0) start the season with a victory, while the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (1-1) take their first loss in their first home game of the season.

The first set would have the Mariners fully in control and steering the game in their favor with a quick 10-0 run. The Bulldogs would finally get on the board thanks to an assist by the setter, Amra Mulic, her first of 13 assists in the game to lead in that category.

Down by eleven, Brooklyn would attempt to respond with a 4-0 run of their own to make it 14-7. However, the same way Brooklyn responded is the same way the USMMA would respond, as they would go on a 9-1 run of their own to make it 23-8, eventually taking the set 25-10.

Similar to the first set, the second set would also feature and large run at the beginning, as the Mariners would jump to an 11-1 lead after the Bulldogs got as close as 2-1.

A 4-0 run would inch the Bulldogs a bit closer in what would be a theme of trailing behind for the rest of the set, losing it 25-16.

It was until the third set in which Brooklyn would take their first lead of the game thanks to a kill by Aleah Rafat via an assist from Amra Mulic to make it 3-2. Mulic would end the night with not only 13 assists but also 1 service ace and 8 digs.

Although the Mariners tried to get momentum back and took back the lead, the highlights of the game would come through a stretch of three plays that gave the Bulldogs something to cheer for. With the score at 9-6, Brooklyn's Ayatallah Elkotby would come up huge on the defensive end with back-to-back blocks. Even though the Mariners would score again, Elkotby would slam a kill to give the Bulldogs a chance. She would end the game leading with 5 total blocks and added 3 kills.

With the score tied at 14-14, it was Aleah Rafat that would help retake the lead with back-to-back kills to make it 16-14. She would end the night leading in two categories with 12 digs and 8 kills to go along with 1 service ace, which three other Bulldogs would also have.

The Mariners would end the match on a 5-0 run to win the third set 25-20.

The Brooklyn College women's volleyball team will travel to Winchester, Virginia for the Shenandoah University Invitational. Their first of two matches on Friday, September 6 is at 3:30pm against the hosts followed by Hood College at 5:30pm.
