BC Men's Basketball Takes Win In Double Overtime Thriller Against Hunter

Bulldogs Win First Conference Game Of Season Over Hawks

NEW YORK, New York ------ Coming into Wednesday night's conference matchup, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team looked to bounce back against the Hunter College Hawks after back-to-back conference losses. Though it took two full overtime periods to get there, they would do just that as they would win their first game there in two seasons by a score of 78-74.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (5-9, 1-3 CUNYAC) are hoping to continue to piece together some conference wins, while the Hunter College Hawks (3-12, 1-3 CUNYAC) now have an identical record to the Bulldogs in conference play.

How It Happened

Brooklyn would hold the lead for a good chunk of the time, but with the score tied at 19-19, Jaden Casanova would dunk it to retake the lead 21-19 with 5:19 left in the first half, a lead that would be carried into the locker room by a score of 27-26.

Both sides would trade leads in the first part of the second half, but the Bulldogs would end up creating some distance with a 7-0 run to go up 40-30 with 15:15 to go.

With Brooklyn holding a 59-52 lead with 4:10 to go, Hunter would put together a 9-0 run to take a 61-59 lead with 1:26 to go. However, Brooklyn would not go away as they would create a play for Casanova to dunk it home with 0:20 to go in regulation, giving Hunter just enough time to miss a layup in the paint to send it to overtime.

The first overtime was as intense as expected, as the Hawks would strike first before David McFadden would hit a three-point shot that would put the Bulldogs up 68-67 with 2:04 to go. A late free throw from the Hawks would tie it up, and both sides would miss a go-ahead jumper to send it to double overtime.

Brooklyn would start the second overtime period on a 6-0 run to put them up 74-68 with 1:45 to go after a jumper by Serge Thrasybule, a run that proved crucial as the game winded down to the free throw line to win it 78-74 after a long night.

For the Bulldogs

  • David McFadden would have a near triple-double, but would still end the night with a 20 point and 17 rebound performance to go with 7 assists and 2 steals on 6-of-12 shooting from deep.
  • Malik Dale would be the leading scorer once again with  21 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
  • Serge Thrasybule would contribute 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists on 4-for-8 shooting.
  • Jaden Casanova would be the only Bulldog to reach double digits off the bench with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal on 4-of-9 shooting.

Up next, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team comes back home to continue conference play against the York College Cardinals on Friday, January 17th at 7:15pm.
