BROOKLYN, NY---Despite trailing by as many as 13 points in the second half, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team would come all the way back to defeat Pratt Institute in overtime, 60-55, on Monday at the West Quad Center. BC improves to 7-9 overall with the non-conference victory while the Cannoneers drop to 0-16. Next Up: Brooklyn returns to their conference slate against local foe, Medgar Evers, on Wednesday at 7pm.
How It Happened
Brooklyn would be down 28-26 at the half, and would eventually find themselves trailing by thirteen in the second half, the largest lead up to that point with 10:53 to go in regulation.
With 8:55 left in regulation and no sign that the Bulldogs going to cut into the lead, the Bulldogs would go on a 13-0 run out of nowhere to tie the game at 51-51 with 2:20 to go. Six of those points would come from
Stephon McGill, who catapulted the beginning of the comeback even before that when he was trying to keep them in the game. Neither team would score despite numerous opportunities, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, both Brooklyn and Pratt would exchange leads between points in the paint, but the most pivotal play would come with 3:07 to go in the overtime period, as
Malik Dale would knock the ball loose, dive for the ball, and proceed to take it coast to coast for a definitive fastbreak layup that would put Brooklyn up 56-55.
Dale would extend the lead with a jumper, and although the Cannoneers had a chance to tie it, they could not execute, sending Dale to the free throw line to seal the game 60-55 after a dramatic turn of events allowed for the Bulldogs to put together a comeback.
