BC Women's Basketball Wins Battle of Brooklyn Against Medgar Evers

Bulldogs Second Half Crucial to Taking Down Cougars

BROOKLYN, New York ------ Coming into Wednesday evening's conference matchup, the Brooklyn College women's basketball team looked to build momentum against the Medgar Evers College Cougars after their victory against another conference opponent in York. Despite the many ties and lead changes, Brooklyn would find a way to pull away in the second half to take win it 63-53.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (8-9, 4-2 CUNYAC) improve their conference record after a rocky start and are one victory away from evening their overall record. Meanwhile, the Medgar Evers College Cougars (2-10, 2-4 CUNYAC) missed out on an opportunity to even their conference record.

How It Happened

Both teams would be going toe-to-toe in the first quarter, with Brooklyn getting as close as 18-17 by the end of the quarter, but never really taking the lead since the beginning of the game. 

With Brooklyn trailing 28-25 with 2:04 to go in the first half, Ameea Daniel would bring the Bulldogs within one with a jumper at 1:45 to go, before hitting a free-throw to tie it, helping Brooklyn take a 29-28 lead at the half.

The Cougars would briefly retake the lead in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs would come back and retake it. Even though the Cougars would tie it at 41-41 with 2:27 to go, the Bulldogs would outscore them 5-1 to end the quarter leading 46-42.

Though Medgar Evers would bring it within three, Brooklyn would go on a 10-0 run to secure the lead for the rest of the game and win it 63-53.

For the Bulldogs

  • Danae McMullen would attain a double-double as the second-leading with 13 points while also leading in three statistical categories with 15 rebounds, 4 blocks and 5 steals to go with 2 assists.
  • Aleah Rafat would also have a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, as well as 2 assists and 1 steal.
  • Dior Dorsey would once again be the leading scorer with 15 points, while also attaining 4 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals.
  • Ameea Daniel would return with a near double-double with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, and 3 steals.

Up next, the Brooklyn College women's basketball team come back home to continue their conference matches with a game against the City College of New York Beavers on Friday, January 24th at 5pm.
