Brooklyn, NY-----In a non-conference 'Battle of Brooklyn' on the road on Tuesday, the Brooklyn College men's volleyball team prevailed to a 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 24-26, 25-9) victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn. BC moves to 2-3 overall with the win while the Bears dropped their Season Opener this evening. Next Up: Following a frantic start to the season, the Bulldogs will have a week to prep for Mt. St. Vincent on the road next Tuesday, February 4, at 6pm.
How It Happened
- After dropping the first point of the match, the Bulldogs took the lead for good in the first set beginning with a four-score rally highlighted by kills put away by Aaron Siu and Joaquin Calderon. BC closed out the first set with another four-score rally capped by back-to-back Calderon kills.
- Brooklyn jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the second set that included a pair of Siu kills. The Bulldogs kept a comfortable lead throughout to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
- The home team avoided the sweep by taking the third set, despite a 6-0 Brooklyn run that included a pair of Jiaian Flanders aces to cut the Bears' lead to 15-14. Following a four-point rally, Brooklyn would eventually go on to lead 24-22 before the Bears scored four unanswered points to stay alive.
- Brooklyn responded in the fourth set by jumping out to a 9-3 lead and never looking back for their second win of the season.
- The Bulldogs hit .314 as a team to the Bears' .033.
For the Bulldogs
- Siu led the way with a match-high 12 kills while hitting .733. He also came up with 5 digs.
- Calderon also reached double-figures in kills with 10. He also served up one of Brooklyn's 7 aces on the evening.
- Flanders finished with a match-high 3 service aces to go along with 6 kills.
- David Lema set for a match-high 25 assists and came up with 8 digs.
