BC Women's Volleyball Gains Third Conference Win Over CCNY

Bulldogs Break Losing Streak Against Beavers

BROOKLYN, New York ------- Playing under a new interim head coach, the Brooklyn College women's volleyball team looked to break their current four-game losing streak in an important conference game against the City College of New York Beavers. Though it was a rollercoaster of emotions, the Bulldogs would prevail and get it done in four sets [25-16, 24-26, 25-19, 25-16] to gain an important victory needed in the conference standings.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (8-10, 3-1 CUNYAC) break their streak and get their first win under a different coaching staff, while the City College of New York Beavers (3-13, 0-3 CUNYAC) continue to search for their first conference win of the season.

Both sides would keep it close in the first set  with a 10-9 score, but Brooklyn would eventually break away by scoring five points in a row ignited by Ella Snobar to take a 15-9 lead. Snobar would keep Brooklyn at a distance, eventually helping win the set 25-16. Ella SNobar would tally up 10 kills, 13 digs,  2 blocks, one ace, and one assist.

The Beavers would find themselves in the lead in the second set, but the Bulldogs would retake the lead scoring five points in a row to take a 18-12 lead. However, the Beavers would not go away, rallying back with five points of their own. The Beavers would briefly take away the lead at 21-20, but the Bulldogs would turn to Saule Okeke-Ziburkus to keep them in the game and spark a run to take a 23-21. With the Beavers on the ropes, the Bulldogs could not put them away, getting outscored 5-1 in the process to drop the set 26-24.  Saule Okeke-Ziburkus would end the night with a leading 17 kills, 23 digs, one ace, and one assist.

Needing a shift in momentum, Brooklyn would send Amra Mulic as the dependable server to spark the team after that heartbreaking set. She would kick it off with 3 aces and 2 assists, helping take an early 7-0 lead. CCNY would not go away quietly, rallying to inch closer at 18-17, but Brooklyn would go on two separate runs, outscoring CCNY 6-2 in the process. Having done so already early in the set, Mulic would skip the set and go for the kill herself, taking the third set 25-19. Amra Mulic would end the night with 36 assists, 5 aces, 18 digs, and a season-high 7 kills as the main setter.

With momentum now in their favor, the Bulldogs would take the lead and never surrender it. Just as strong as it was the whole game, Okeke-Ziburkus and Mulic would take turns assisting eachother to close the set 25-16.

The victory marks Lauren Caiaccia's first win as the interim head coach of Brooklyn, sparking a lively energy to end the night on a good note.

Up next, the Brooklyn College women's volleyball team goes on the road for non-conference play against the Saint Elizabeth University Eagles on Thursday, October 16th at 7:00pm.
