BC Men's Basketball Escapes York On the Road

Bulldogs Attains Key Conference Win Against the Cardinals

JAMAICA, New York ------ Coming into Tuesday evening's conference game, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team was hoping to find an important win to stay afloat in the conference on the road against the York College Cardinals. Though the matchup was tightly contested, the Bulldogs would come away with an important victory, beating the Cardinals 61-56.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (10-13, 5-7 CUNYAC) improve their conference record when it was needed most, while the York College Cardinals (3-18, 1-11 CUNYAC) lose another close game despite their valiant effort.

How It Happened

Brooklyn and York would go to war in this game, but no part more notable than the first half, where both would be tied seven times throughout. Brooklyn would be up 27-15 with 7:12 to go in the first half, but York would come storming back on a 13-0 run to take a 28-27 lead with 3:58 left.

The Bulldogs' McGill would tie the game at 34-34 with 0:41 to go until halftime, but the Cardinals would retake the lead with a layup with 0:28 to go, taking a 36-34 lead into halftime.

The second half would feature a total of seven lead changes, but none more important than towards the end of the game. With 2:10 to go in regulation, York would score a tough jumper to take the lead 56-55. Brooklyn would take a thirty second timeout, drawing up a play that would get Gabriel Barker to the free throw line with 1:36 to go, where he would hit both to take the lead 57-55.

As the Cardinals threatened to retake the lead, David McFadden would come up with a huge steal that would give the Bulldogs a valuable extra possession, one that would be taken full advantage of as Barker would score the go-ahead layup off a pass from McFadden with 1:03 to go.

Though both teams would miss scoring opportunities, Barker would come off huge once again with an offensive rebound, tipping the ball in to score the dagger with 0:14 left. York would miss a three-pointer coming off the timeout, and Brooklyn's defense would hold on to win it 61-56.

For the Bulldogs

  • Serge Thrasybule led all scorers with a strong 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist on 7-of-9 shooting.
  • Gabriel Barker would be the only other scorer in double figures, coming through when it mattered most with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assist, 2 blocks, and 1 steal.
  • David McFadden would also be close to a double-double with 8 rebounds to lead all Bulldogs to go with 8 points, 3 assists, and 1 steal.

Up next, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team take on another conference opponent, the Medgar Evers College Cougars, Friday on Senior Night, which takes place Valentine's Day, February 14th at 7:15pm.
