BC Men's Basketball Earns Key Victory Over Medgar Evers On Senior Night

Bulldogs Seniors Shine Against Cougars

BROOKLYN, New York ------ Once again hosting a game on Valentine's Day, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team found themselves in the middle of a conference battle on Senior Night against the Medgar Evers College Cougars. Both teams came in separated by just a single game with aspirations of making it into the CUNYAC Quarterfinals and even bigger wishes of possibly hosting that game as well. Seniors Malik Dale, Mekhi Barlow, David McFadden, Luqman, Ahmed, Gabriel Barker, and Serge Thrasybule were all honored in a pregame ceremony, one that seemed to spark an energy that would lift the Bulldogs to a victory over the Cougars by a score of 75-58.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (11-13, 6-7 CUNYAC) earned an important win that not only keeps them up in the standings, but also increases their chances of hosting their first playoff game in six years, while the Medgar Evers College Cougars (6-18, 4-9 CUNYAC) still have a glimmer of hope to sneak in to the quarterfinals.

How It Happened

Although Medgar would strike first, Brooklyn would proceed to go on a 9-0 run to take back the lead, as the starting lineup filled with seniors would share the ball to get everybody on the board in the process.

The Cougars attempted to get back into the game, cutting it to as low as a one-point difference with 12:09 remaining in the first half, but the Bulldogs would answer right back to go up by as many as fourteen with 2:53 to go in the half. Catapulted by Dale and McFadden getting into double digits in the first half, the Bulldogs woud go into halftime up 40-31.

After Medgar tried to climb back into the game at the free throw line to make it a ten-point difference, Brooklyn would go on a 12-0 run that would make the game almost unreachable, going up by a score of 62-40 with 9:16 still left to play.

The Cougars could not get back in at that point, and in a colaborative effort, the Bulldogs crowd went home happy as they celebrated a pivotal 75-58 victory over their cross-borough rivals.

For the Bulldogs

  • McFadden went on to lead Brooklyn in three statistical categories with 17 points, 7 assists, and 2 blocks, while adding 2 steals and 5 rebounds on 7-of-14 shooting, including 3-for-6 from three.
  • Dale was right behind him with 13 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists and 3 steals.
  • Thrasybule would tack on 11 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and a Bulldogs-leading 5 steals.
  • McGill and Barker would have identical rebounding numbers with 7, 3 of them on the offensive end, to lead in that category.

Up next, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team rides a two-game winning streak as they travel to Harlem, New York for their final regular season game against another conference opponent in the City College of New York Beavers on Tuesday, February 18th at 7:00pm.
