BC Men's Volleyball Puts Up A Fight But Fall To Baruch In Home Opener

Bulldogs Beat In First Conference Game Against Bearcats

BROOKLYN, New York ------ Coming into Thursday night's game, the Brooklyn College men's volleyball team would not only have their first conference game, but they would also host their first game at home of the season. Though they fought to the very end in front of the home crowd, they would ultimately lose in four sets, stealing a set after many doubters predicted otherwise (21-25, 15-25, 25-20, 14-25) giving the crowd something to cheer for. The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (3-7, 0-1 CUNYAC) extends their losing streak to four games in the process, but have something to build off of in terms of confidence, while the Baruch College Bearcats (4-5, 3-0 CUNYAC) remain undefeated in conference play.

How It Happened

Brooklyn would find themselves down for a good chunk of the first set, finding themselves in a 20-9 hole, but were able to climb back thanks to a few kills by Aaron Siu to make it a close game at 23-21, outscoring Baruch 12-3 in the span. However, Baruch would take advantage of a few attacks to take it 25-21.

The second set would feature four tied scores, before the Bearcats would finally pull away to take a 20-13 advantage, building the momentum needed for another 4-0 run that would help close the set 25-25.

The third set would feature seven tied scores, only this time it was Brooklyn that would try hard to keep their advantage. Thanks to a pivotal 4-0 run, they built enough of a lead to escape Baruch, who was creeping in towards the end before Joaquin Calderon would close the door and take the set 25-20.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were unable to build off of that momentum, falling into a quick 6-0 hole that they would not be able to overcome, falling in the final set 25-14.

For the Bulldogs

  • Calderon was able to get in double digits with 10 kills, 2 aces, 1 block assist, 5 digs for 12.5 points.
  • David Lema led in the assist category with 27 assists to go with 4 digs.
  • Aaron Siu was near double digits with 9 kills and 6 digs.

Up next, the Brooklyn College men's volleyball team travels to Newark, New Jersey for a tri-match on Saturday, February 15th at 11:00am to take on the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders followed by the St. Joseph's University-Long Island Golden Eagles right after at about 1:00pm.
