BC Men's Volleyball Sweeps Old Westbury For First Win At Home

BROOKLYN, New York ------ Coming into Tuesday evening's non-conference match, the Brooklyn College men's volleyball team would go up against a familiar opponent in the Old Westbury Panthers, a team that had given the Bulldogs a run for their money last season. However, despite the previous encounter, Brooklyn would find themselves on the winning side of a sweep for the first time this season, taking down the Panthers in three sets [25-9, 25-17, 25-18] that were propelled by the first one.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (4-9) end their six-game spell in convincing fashion, while the Old Westbury Panthers (0-5) continue to search for their first victory of the season.

How It Happened

Old Westbury would strike first, but it would be their only lead of the set, as Brooklyn would score three to five points for every one point that Old Westbury scored in between runs, led by 5 kills from Aaron Siu to take it 25-9.

The second set would feature eight tied scores in the process, and every time either team tried to pull away, the other would go on an identical run to tie it back. With the score tied 13-13, the Bulldogs would go on the 4-0 run that would turn the tide completely, outscoring the Panthers in the process 12-4 on two separate runs to take it 25-17.

The third set started off similarly with three tied scores, but this time, Brooklyn was able to pull away much faster, turning the Old Westbury deficit from one to seven after a 6-0 run that featured three service aces from Siu. Despite the Panthers trying to get back in it, the Bulldogs would pull away with a 25-18 victory in the final set.

For the Bulldogs

  • Aaron Siu led the attack with 11 kills, 4 aces, and 5 digs.
  • Dion Csikortos would gather a total of 9 digs at the libero position and the only other assist of the night for Brooklyn.
  • David Lema would lead with 31 assists to go with 3 aces and 4 digs.
  • Joaquin Calderon would be second in points, contributing on both sides of the floor with 6 kills, 7 digs, 3 blocks, and 1 ace.

Up next, the Brooklyn College men's volleyball team remains at home for a conference matchup with the York College Cardinals on Thursday, February 27th at 7:00pm.
