BC Women's Basketball Captures Fifth Straight CUNYAC Title

New York, NY----Capturing their fifth straight CUNYAC Championship, the Brooklyn College women's basketball pulled out a 59-54 victory over Hunter College in the conference tournament final on Thursday.  The No. 3 seeded Bulldogs improve to 17-11 with the championship win while top-seed and championship host, Hunter, moves to 20-6.  With the tonight's win, Brooklyn punches their ticket to their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.  The Bulldogs will learn their First Round fate on Monday, March 3, during the NCAA Tournament selection show on NCAA.com at 2:30 pm ET. 
 
How It Happened
  • With the Bulldogs clinging to a 50-48 lead, Dior Dorsey took control and scored the next two buckets for BC to extend their lead back up to five points with a little over three minutes to play.  Hunter would come within three points after a made three with :33 to go in regulation before Brooklyn iced the game from the free-throw line and came up with a pair of big stops. 
  • The Bulldogs grew their lead to 47-40 following an Alina Estrella made jumper with 8:18 left in regulation.  Hunter cut the Brooklyn advantage to 49-46 following a three-point make. 
  • Brooklyn opened the first 2:30 of the second half on a 6-2 run to take a 33-28 advantage.  An Alina Estrella pull-up jumper make, extended BC's lead to 36-29 with five minutes to go in  the third quarter.  Hunter responded with a 9-0 run to retake the lead, 38-36, with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter. BC answered the call in the final minute of the third period with a 7-0 run sparked by back-to-back Aleah Rafat makes. Brooklyn took a 43-38 lead to end the third quarter following an Ameea Daniel three-point make.
  • After Hunter drained the first three of the contest, Brooklyn responded with a 10-0 run sparked by an Alina Estrella three of her own.  Anna Kitch also knocked down a three during the run.  Kitch would give BC a 16-9 lead to end the quarter with a made jumper. 
  • Hunter would make a stand in the second quarter and after an 8-0 run, grabbed a 21-18 lead with 3:42 to go in the first half.  Brooklyn closed out the first half on a 4-0 run to take a 27-26 halftime lead.  The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Hawks, 15-3, on the offensive glass in the first half.
  • The Bulldogs outscored the Hawks, 16-10, in points off of turnovers.  BC also finished with a dominant advantage on the offensive boards, 25-12.

  • "I'm so proud of the way we played tonight," Head Coach, Megan Campbell would exclaim after winning her second straight conference title at the helm of the program. "We had a lot of ups and downs this season including a number of injuries, but the team showed a lot of mental toughness to get to this point." 
  • "Words can't describe what this championship feels like," junior guard, Dior Dorsey would comment. "This season has been the definition of perseverance and I couldn't be happier."
 
For the Bulldogs
  • Named CUNYAC Tournament MVP, Dorsey scored a team-high 15 points while also grabbing 8 rebounds, and coming up with 4 steals. 
  • Estrella garnered All-Tournament honors, finishing with 13 points and dishing out 8 assists. 
  • Kitch was also named to the All-Tournament Team, finishing with 11 points and 8 rebounds.
