BC Men's Volleyball Hosts Tri-Match Against John Jay and Russell Sage

BROOKLYN, New York ------ Hosting Saturday's tri-match, the Brooklyn College Men's Volleyball team looked forward to coming back home to face the Russell Sage College Gators and the John Jay College Bloodhounds. They would kick off the tri-match taking John Jay to the limit, but they still fell in three sets [23-25, 22-25, 16-25]. In the third game of the tri-match, they would steal one set away from Russell Sage (19-25, 25-22, 27-29, 15-25] going toe-to-toe with them until the very end.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (8-14, 4-5 CUNYAC) put up a fight that may not have shown on the scoreboard or record. Meanwhile, the John Jay College Bloodhounds (14-5, 6-2 CUNYAC) come away splitting the tri-match, improving their conference record in the process and the Russell Sage College Gators (7-20) get a much needed pair of wins after escaping both CUNYAC teams.

vs John Jay

How it Happened
  • John Jay would strike first in the first set, but Brooklyn would tie it up and eventually go on to score four in a row to take a 10-5 lead. However, as both sides traded points back-and-forth, the Bloodhounds would eventually gain the upperhand with a 7-0 run that would help them take a 17-16 lead. Despite the Bulldogs trying to climb back into the set, the Bloodhounds would score the defining point to take it 25-23.
  • In the second set, Brooklyn and John Jay would bounce the lead around, to the point it came down to the ending once again. With the Bulldogs up 21-20, the Bloodhounds would score three points in a row to take a 23-21 lead. Despite a late kill by Brooklyn, John Jay would score the two points needed to close out the set 25-22.
  • The Bulldogs tried to scramble and come back into the game in the third set, cutting it to four, but the Bloodhounds would go on a 5-0 run to go up 13-4. The lead became unreachable as the Bloodhounds would complete the sweep with a 25-16 score.
For the Bulldogs
  • Jason Lin finished with 7 kills, 2 aces, and 1 block.
  • David Lema finished with a leading 22 assists, 2 aces, and 5 digs.
  • Jiaian Flanders 4 kills, 1 assist, 1 ace, 1 block, 2 digs

vs Russell Sage

How it Happened
  • Brooklyn would start it off strong with a service ace from David Lema, attempting to set the tone early on. However, for every time that Brooklyn tried to pull away, Russell Sage would close the gap once again. With Brooklyn up 14-13, their last lead of the set, Russell Sage would climb back in with a couple of short bursts of points, including the ending where they scored two points to close the first set 25-19.
  • The second set saw the Gators strike first, taking a quick 6-1 lead, but the Bulldogs would come back with the next four points. Both sides would trade points up until the end with both sides tied at 19-19. The Bulldogs would pull away with the next three points with kills from Armand Kaloshi and Jason Lin, eventually winning their first set of the day 25-22.
  • With new momentum, Brooklyn would start off strong with the first three points of the third set. As Brooklyn hung onto the lead, Sage would go on a 7-0 run to retake the set. As the match continued, both sides kept it close trading the lead. Sage would go on and score four in a row to take a 24-19 lead, but once again, Lin would come up strong with three kills, sparking Brooklyn to tie it 24-24.
  • For the first time, the set went past 25 points in a crucial set that could turn the game in anybody's favor. The Gators would strike first to edge the Bulldogs, but the Bulldogs scored two points of their own. This would happen in a similar pattern, and with the score knotted at 27, the Gators would finally prevail and score the two points needed to end the set 29-27.
  • Sage would strike first in the fourth set, taking an early lead. As the set went on, Brooklyn would trail nearby, down by a score of 18-15. Just when it seemed as though the Bulldogs had a chance, the Gators would close it out in convincing fashion, scoring the next seven and winning the set 25-15 to take the game.
