BC Softball Continues Conference Success Against Lehman On the Road

Pair of Dingers, Pair of Wins, Lightning Strikes Twice For the Bulldogs

THE BRONX, New York ----- Continuing conference play, the Brooklyn College softball team would travel up north to go on the road and face the Lehman College Lightning. The Bulldogs have won the last four games by small margins against their Bronx counterparts. It seemed as though today would be no different, as both teams would stay close until Brooklyn College would break through and secure the victory 15-6 in the first game. The second game would end in similar fashion with a 15-5 game that featured two home runs over the fence.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (12-15, 4-2 CUNYAC) continue to play well in the conference, extending their win streak overall and in the conference after losing the first pair of conference games. Meanwhile the Lehman College Lightning (6-12, 0-4 CUNYAC) continue to search for their first conference victory.

Game 1

Brooklyn would start off the game strong in the top of the first inning, going through the entire lineup in the process. With the score 1-0 after a walk and the bases loaded, Zoey Van Vleet would rip a triple, finding a way to score herself on an error to put Brooklyn up 5-0.

The Lightning would tack on three runs in the first two innings before the Bulldogs would come to bat in the top of the third. With runners on first and second, Aaliyah Vargas would hit a RBI-double to extend the lead to 6-3, eventually ending the inning at 8-3.

After six innings, the score stood at 10-6, and with Lehman still within striking distance, Brooklyn would go on to put this game away with 5 runs in the top of the seventh inning. Palacios, Gonzalez, and Rodriguez would get their first hits of the game in the most crucial moments, hitting a single and a pair of doubles respectively to put the game out of reach 15-6.
  • Van Vleet went 1-for-5 with a triple, bringing in 3 RBI and scoring 3 runs.
  • Vargas went an efficient 2-for-3, getting on base on three of her four turns.
  • Vida Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with 2 runs and 3 RBI.

Game 2

The Bulldogs would keep the same lineup, and would once again start it off in incredible fashion. Once again, the Bulldogs would load the bases as Vida Rodriguez would step up to the plate. With only one out in the inning up to that point, she would knock a rocket over the center field fence for a grand slam to put the Bulldogs up 4-0. Ashley Konner would bring home one more run with an RBI-single, to close the inning 5-0.

As Lehman would score a run in the bottom of the first, Brooklyn looked to extend their lea. Following a double play, Lianna Gonzalez would continue to build off from her final hit in the last game, blasting a home run over the left field wall to make it 6-1 in the top of the second.

The Lightning would respond in the bottom of the second, hitting an inside the ballpark home run of their own to cut the Bulldogs lead to 6-5.

With the need and desire to pull away, Brooklyn would go on an offensive barrage in the fourth inning, scoring five runs. Gonzalez would strike again in the fourth, doubling to left field to make it 8-5. Dasha Goodman would bring home Gonzalez a single to left field to make it 9-5, before Rodriguez would once again clear the bases, hitting a triple to make it 10-5, helping ignite an 11-5 lead.

Lehman would not respond, and instead, the Bulldogs would add on to their lead, as it seemed everybody would hit a single to get on base and expand their lead to 15-5 for the final score.
  • Rodriguez would go a perfect 3-for-3 bringing in 6 RBI and 2 runs, including a triple and a home run.
  • Gonzalez would go a near perfect 3-for-4, scoring 3 runs and bringing 3 RBI, including a double and a home run.
  • Goodman would effectively hit 2-for-3 in her return to the lineup, scoring 2 runs and 2 RBI.

Up next, the Brooklyn College softball team will be in action for the third day in a row, returning home for non-conference play against the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins on Thursday, April 17th at 12:00pm.
