BC Softball Keeps It Close Against Mount Saint Vincent

Bulldogs Win Streak Ends At Four Against Dolphins

BROOKLYN, New York ------ For the third day in a row, the Brooklyn College softball team would play a doubleheader, returning home for an encounter with the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins. Though both teams were tied in the sixth inning of the first game, it was the seventh inning that would make the difference, as the visitors would win 10-6. The second game would also be closely contested, but the Bulldogs comeback would fall short by a score of 6-3, with both games going the distance.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (12-17) ends their win streak at four, running out of gas after playing three doubleheaders in three consecutive days during the Spring Break. Meanwhile, the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (11-14) get a few games closer to evening their overall record for the season.

Game 1

Mount Saint Vincent would put up a run in the first and second innings to go up 2-0.

After three scoreless innings, Brooklyn would finally get on the board in the fourth inning. With runners in scoring position, Molly Martin would hit an infield single that helped her advance to second and advance Vargas to third, cutting the lead to 2-1. A sacrifice fly from Paige Alaia-Palacios would tie the game at 2-2. On the verge of scoring again, Melanie Millan would hit a single to right field to bring home Martin for the 3-2 lead.

The Dolphins would take back the lead, scoring a run in the fifth inning and another in the top of the sixth to make it 4-3.

Millan would keep the Bulldogs in the game once again, hitting a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in the tying run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-4.

Unfortunately, Mount Saint Vincent would find a way to break out in the top of the seventh inning, scoring a barrage of 6 runs, more than the other six innings combined, to make it 10-4.

Brooklyn would attempt a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, as Vargas would hit an RBI-triple to left field to cut it to 10-5. Bernstein would bring Vargas home on an RBI-single, but it would not be enough, as Brooklyn would lose 10-6.
  • Martin would hit an efficient 2-for-4, scoring 2 runs, 1 RBI, and getting 1 put out.
  • Millan would go 1-for-4, but a sacrifice fly would bring in 2 RBI, getting 3 put outs and 3 assists on defense.
  • Palacios went 2-for-3, including a sacrifice fly to go with 1 RBI, 6 put outs and 3 assists on defense.

Game 2

The Dolphins would strike first once again after two scoreless innings from both teams, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

The Bulldogs would respond in the bottom of the fourth as Zoey Van Vleet would hit a single to right field, advancing Rodriguez to third and bringing Gonzalez home to tie the game 1-1. Ashley Konner would reach on a fielder's choice, advancing Van Vleet to second and scoring Rodriguez to take the 2-1 lead.

With the bases loaded, Mount Saint Vincent would hit a triple that would clear the bases of everyone except the runner to make it 4-2, igniting them to take a 6-2 lead in the top of the fifth.

Down to the final inning, Gonzalez would hit an RBI-triple to left center to bring Martin home for the 6-3, but the rally would be cut short, as the Bulldogs would lose by three.
  • Millan hit 2-for-4, while paying great defense with 3 put outs and 3 assists.
  • Konner 1-for-3 with 1 RBI, 1 stolen base and 8 put outs on defense.
  • Van Vleet would hit 2-for-4, including a double, bringing in 1 RBI and 1 put out on defense.

Up next, the Brooklyn College softball team finally gets a break before continuing their homestand against their conference opponents, the Baruch College Bearcats on Wednesday, April 23rd at 4:00pm.
