BC Softball Walk Off With Two Key Victories Over Baruch On Senior Day

Bulldogs End A Near Decade-Long Streak Versus Bearcats

BROOKLYN, New York ------ Coming into Wednesday evening's pivotal doubleheader at home, the Brooklyn College softball team looked to bounce back and vanquish, not only their current two-game skid from two disappointing losses last week, but also a losing streak that dated to nearly a decade ago. In order to do that, they would have to try on Senior Day, which honored Danielle Guzzardi, Jasmine Diaz, Dasha Goodman, Melanie Millan, and Zoey Van Vleet. The Baruch College Bearcats had gotten the better of the Bulldogs overall, winning the last seventeen games against them, including the postseason games. This time, things would go very differently, as the Bulldogs would sweep both games to improve in the conference standings. Brooklyn College would hold on to win the first game by a score of 7-5, and then make a storybook comeback, in their last opportunity to hit, to win it 5-4 in the second game.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (14-17, 6-2 CUNYAC) earned their first sweep over the Baruch College Bearcats (11-19, 5-3 CUNYAC), who started the day a place higher in the standings. since the year 2016, which is nearly a decade ago.

Game 1

Baruch would strike first in the top of the first inning, as they would extend the inning, despite having two outs on the board, to put take an early 3-0 lead.

Brooklyn would respond right away in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded after scoring their first run of the game off a walk, Ashley Konner would hit a single to right field to bring Goodman and Vida Rodriguez home to tie the game at 3-3.

Lianna Gonzalez would hit a double to left center for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second, bringing home Millan, whose actions would be replicated by Rodriguez with an infield RBI-double to make it 5-3. Van Vleet would expand the lead with a single to right center field, bringing home Rodriguez for the 6-3 lead.

After a few scoreless innings, the Bearcats would close the gap scoring two runs off a throwing error to make it 6-5.

However, Van Vleet's RBI-single to center field would allow Magny to pinch run her way to securing a 7-5 victory for Brooklyn.
  • Gonzalez 2-for-3, both of which were doubles, scoring 2 runs, and 1 RBI as well as having 9 put outs on defense.
  • Rodriguez went 2-for-4, getting 1 RBI, 2 runs, 2 put outs on defense and 2 assists.
  • Van Vleet would go a solid 2-for-3, scoring 2 RBI, and claiming 6 put outs defensively.
  • Konner would also hit 2-for-4, hitting 2 RBI in the game.

Game 2

Similar to the first game, the bases would be loaded for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the first, allowing Goodman to draw a walk for the first score of the game.

Both sides would fail to score any runs for nearly four innings, leaving many players on base. The Bearcats would eventually break the scoring drought in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice lineout to bring home the tying run 1-1.

In the same inning, Brooklyn would take advantage of a wild pitch, as Millan would make it safely to home to break the tie 2-1.

Baruch would tie the game once again in the top of the sixth inning at 2-2 off an RBI-double, and then proceed to take a late lead for the first time this game in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, a single to center field would tack on the tiebreaking run to make it 3-2. Brooklyn's defense would not complete the double play to end the inning, allowing Baruch to add another run on a fielder's choice, extending the visitors' lead to 4-2.

Despite being behind for the first time in this game, the Bulldogs would not give up hope, especially when the top of the lineup was due up to bat. With runners on second and third, Gonzalez would start the rally with an RBI-double to left field, cutting the lead to 4-3.

In the same situation in terms of the bases, Goodman would hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field, bringing both baserunners home at lightning speed, to the point one of them nearly lost their helmet trying to end the game, as Brooklyn would hit a walk-off for the 5-4 victory in the final inning of play.
  • Millan would go a perfect 2-for-2, drawing 2 walks, scoring 2 runs, attaining 1 put out defensively and 3 assists.
  • Paige Alaia-Palacios would hit 1-for-3 from the leadoff spot, scoring 2 runs with 1 assist on defense.
  • Gonzalez would hit a solid 2-for-3, including a double, scoring 1 run and 1 RBI to go with 6 put outs on defense.

Up next, the Brooklyn College softball team will play their last home game of the regular season against the Old Westbury Panthers on Friday, April 25th at 4pm.
