BC Softball Hosts Old Westbury in Final Home Doubleheader of the Regular Season

Brooklyn, NY----Hosting their final home twin bill of the regular season, the Brooklyn College softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to SUNY Old Westbury on Friday at BC Field.  BC fell to the Panthers 10-4 in Game 1 before closing out the evening with an 8-0 (6 Innings) in Game 2.  Brooklyn moves to 14-19 overall following the day while the Panthers improved to 14-16.  Next Up: Brooklyn closes out the regular season next Saturday, May 3, in another big CUNYAC doubleheader against Hunter College on the road on Randall's Island (Field #12) with first pitch at 12pm.

Game 1

The Panthers would put up five runs on the board in the top of the first inning, putting the Bulldogs in quite a deficit early on. However, in that same inning, the Bulldogs would load the bases, forcing a walk that bought home the first run of the game to cut the lead to 5-1.

After keeping Old Westbury off the board, Brooklyn would find another run through an RBI-single from Melanie Millan, who was leading off for the first time in the lineup, cutting the difference to 5-2. She would proceed to advance to second, putting herself into scoring position.

With runners on second and third, Vida Rodriguez will hit her way to second base to bring in the two runners, making it 5-4.

Though the Bulldogs remained in striking distance, even after a run by the Panthers in the third inning, they would not close the gap, as the Panthers would four more runs in the sixth to win it 10-4.
  • In the leadoff spot, Millan would go 2-for-4, including a double, scoring 1 run and getting 2 putouts and 3 assists.
  • Lianna Gonzalez would also go 2-for-4, including a double, scoring 1 run and getting 4 putouts defensively..

Game 2

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the first, Brooklyn would get their first runner on base, as Millan would be hit by a pitch. Her teammates would advance her into scoring position with a pair of groundouts that forced the Old Westbury defense to field the ball to get them out, but they could not bring her home.

The Bulldogs would have another opportunity in the bottom of the fifth, as Molly Martin would get hit by a pitch while trailing 6-0. Sandra Diaz would pinch run in her place, taking full advantage and adding a stolen base to get herself into scoring position. However, with two outs already on the board, the odds were not in her favor, as she would be left on base as well.

Old Westbury would pretty much close out the game in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two more runs to make it 8-0.
  • Ashley konner had 9 putouts defensively, with the second -closest being Gonzalez with 5.
  • Diaz played the pinchrunning role well, adding a stolen base to her stat sheet.
  • Despite the loss, Martin had 4 strikeouts and only 4 earned runs.
