BC Advances to Day 2 of CUNYAC Championship Tournament for First Time in a Decade

Brooklyn, NY----Earning their first win in the CUNYAC Championship Tournament since 2015, the Brooklyn College softball team finished with a split on Day 1 of the tourney to advance to Day 2.  #3 Brooklyn defeated #2 Hunter College in their first game of the day, 4-0, before falling to top-seeded John Jay, 7-1, in the winner's bracket game to close out the day.  #4 Baruch knocked out Hunter to advance to Day 2 of the four-team tournament.  Next Up: Brooklyn will take on Baruch at 11am on Saturday, May 10, at Brooklyn College Field.  Winner will advance to the championship round against John Jay at 1:15 pm. Game three on May 10 if necessary is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start.  All games will be played at Brooklyn College Field.

vs Hunter

Brooklyn would find themselves in a tough rematch with their last regular season opponent in Hunter. After three scoreless innings between the two, stuck in a pitching duel between the two sides, Brooklyn would break free in the top of the fourth inning. Dasha Goodman may have grounded out, but it was a sacrifice worth making, as the Hunter defense chose to get her out rather than the runner, Vida Rodriguez, coming home to make it 1-0.

The Bulldogs knew that holding on to the minimum difference was not going to cut it, putting players in scoring position in the top of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, it would be Goodman again who would hit a single to center field, bringing in two more runs and advancing Rodriguez to third, expanding the lead to 3-0 with that two-run RBI-single.

Van Vleet would strike out looking, but not before helping the Bulldogs score once again off a pass ball, to make the score 4-0.

It would not be the Hawks' day, as the Bulldogs would start their performance in the tournament with a shutout.
  • Rodriguez would go 3-for-4 including a triple, with 2 runs, 1 put out and 3 assists.
  • Goodman would go 1-for-3, but would bring in 3 RBIs in the process, getting on base twice.
  • The Bulldogs would gain a key victory in the form of a shutout behind Danielle Guzzardi, who had 4 strikeouts in the process..

vs John Jay

The game against the Bloodhounds was already as it got, as they would score seven unanswered runs in the span of five inning to make it 7-0.

After robbing John Jay from a walkoff win thanks to the defensive effort of Sage Bernstein, who took over at left field, Brooklyn would extend the game and avoid the shutout late in the top of the seventh inning. As Brooklyn would have runners in scoring position once again, Molly Martin would hit an RBI-single to right center field to bring in Bernstein home and allowing Ashley Konner to advance to third.

Despite the late rally effort, it would come up short as John Jay would go on to win 7-1, earning an automatic spot in the championship game.
  • Konner would hit a solid 2-for-3, putting away 6 players on defense.
  • Bernstein went a perfect 1-for-1 and would scie the only run of the game.
  • Martin would play the role of hitting and pitching, providing the insurance run to end the dy 1-for-3 with 1 RBI to go with 4 assists on defense and 1 strikeout.
