Brooklyn, NY----Led by sophomore guard
Joe Charles' game-high 22 points, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team defeated Baruch College, 74-71, in overtime on Wednesday at the West Quad Center. It is the Bulldogs' first victory over the Bearcats since defeating them in the 2020 CUNYAC Championship game. Brooklyn improves to 4-9 overall (2-1 CUNYAC) while the Bearcats drop to 5-9 (2-1 CUNYAC). Next Up: Brooklyn will look to keep their momentum going in the right direction in conference play at Medgar Evers on Friday at 7pm.
With the score tied, 70-70, with 1:27 left in overtime, Charles would give Brooklyn the lead for good by knocking down a pair of clutch free-throws. After a key stop on the defensive end,
Jordany Martinez, extended the lead to 73-70 with :27 remaining in overtime. Following a D'Aze Hunter made free-throw, Brooklyn was able to shutdown Baruch's final attempt at tying the game from behind the arc.
In a game that had 19 lead changes, Brooklyn took a 62-59 lead with :27 left in regulation following a 5-0 run sparked by a make in the paint finished by Adoulaye Gueye. However, the Bearcats would send the game into overtime on a three-point make with :10 left in regulation.
Baruch led by as many as five points a two separate occasions in the first half. Brooklyn would eventually tie the game by halftime, 30-30, thanks to a
Herbert Gary layup with :06 to go in teh first half.
Brooklyn doubled-up Baruch, 16-8, in second chance points scored, finishing with an 18-7 advantage on the offensive boards for the contest.
Trevon Coppin paced Baruch with 21 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds.
Charles shot 4-7 from behind the arc and 4-5 from the free-throw line on the evening. Gueye finished with a career-high 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds off of the bench. Hunter finished with first double-double of his career with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also dished out 6 assists on the night.
