Bulldogs Show Promise, But Fall to Mt. St. Vincent in Both Games of Season Opener

Brooklyn, NY----Despite a number of bright moments on the afternoon, the Brooklyn College softball team dropped both games of their season opening doubleheader to the University of Mt. St. Vincent on Saturday at Brooklyn College Field.  The Dolphins scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning to secure a 4-1 victory in Game 1 before holding onto a 5-4 win in Game 2.  Mt. St. Vincent begins their season with a 2-0 record.  Next Up: Brooklyn will trip down to Florida for eight scheduled games next week beginning with Geneva College at 9am and RIT at 11am on Monday, 3/9.  

Game 1 Recap | Brooklyn - 1, UMSV- 4 

Mount Saint Vincent opened its season with a 4-1 victory over Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon at BC Field.

After two scoreless innings, Mount Saint Vincent broke through in the third inning. A single by Kayla O'Connor and a wild pitch moved runners into scoring position before Paige Staley delivered an RBI groundout to score Kendra Rodriguez and give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.

The Dolphins added key insurance in the fifth inning. With two runners on, Staley came through again, blasting a two-run double to right field that extended the lead to 3-0.

Brooklyn answered in the bottom half of the inning when Jalyn Roberts and Victoria Elderbaum recorded back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up, Haylee Burleigh brought Roberts home with a sacrifice to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Mount Saint Vincent pushed across another run in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a Brooklyn error and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Kendra Rodriguez to make it 4-1.

From there, Dolphins pitcher Savannah Autobee took control, tossing a complete game and allowing just four hits, one run, while striking out four as well to secure the win.

Brooklyn starter Kureshma Dhanraj battled through seven innings in the loss, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out seven batters.

For Mount Saint Vincent

Paige Staley led the Dolphins offensively with a double and three runs batted in. Kayla OConnor added a key single and Kendra Rodriguez drove in two runs during the game. Savannah Autobee was effective on the mound, pitching all seven innings for the win.

For Brooklyn College

Jazlyn Roberts contributed two hits and scored the team's only run. Haylee Burleigh drove in the run with a sacrifice and Victoria Elderbaum added a hit during the rally.

 

Game 2 Recap | Brooklyn- 4, UMSV- 5 

Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Riley Van Pelt and Samantha Aviles singled to start the frame before Paige Goerman and Miralba Sandez walked to load the bases. Chloe Hart followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run and Emma Capozucca added a single to bring home another, giving the Dolphins a 2-0 advantage.

Brooklyn responded in the bottom of the first inning. L. Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and A. Cook singled to put runners on base. V. Rodriguez walked to load the bases and K. Young delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2.

The Dolphins regained the lead in the third inning. Paige Goerman doubled and Chloe Hart singled, advancing Goerman to third. Emma Capozucca reached on an error to score an unearned run and Simone Caruso followed with a single to drive in another, giving Mount Saint Vincent a 4-2 lead.

Chloe Hart tripled in the fifth inning to bring home Emma Capozucca for a 5-2 lead. Brooklyn scored in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. Kureshma Dhanraj drove in a run in the fifth inning and Jazlyn Roberts added an RBI single in the sixth, cutting the deficit to 5-4.

Mount Saint Vincent closed out the game in the seventh inning as Gracie Laukkanen held Brooklyn scoreless, preserving the one-run victory.

The Dolphins scored five runs on eight hits and committed two errors, while the Bulldogs scored four runs on seven hits with one error. Gracie Laukkanen earned the win, pitching seven innings and allowing four runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. Jessica Bowe took the loss for Brooklyn College, giving up five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts over seven innings.

For Mount Saint Vincent

Chloe Hart contributed two runs batted in and recorded a triple. Paige Goerman added two hits including a double and Emma Capozucca drove in three runs. Gracie Laukkanen was effective on the mound, pitching a complete game to secure the victory.

For Brooklyn College

Katelyn Young doubled and drove in two runs. Addy Cook recorded three hits and Jazlyn Roberts added a hit and drove in a run. Lianna Gonzalez reached base twice, including being hit by a pitch twice.
