Bulldogs Drop a Pair of Non-Conference Games to Old Westbury

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College softball team dropped both games of non-conference doubleheader to SUNY Old Westbury at Brooklyn College field on Wednesday.  BC fell to the Panthers, 12-3 (5 Innings), in Game 1 before their game 2 defeat, 12-2 (5 Innings).  Brooklyn moves to 10-20 overall with the losses while Old Westbury improves to 16-8.  Next Up: Brooklyn returns to their conference on the road against Hunter College on Saturday, April 25, for a 12pm doubleheader on Randall's Island (Field #12).

Game 1 Recap | Brooklyn- 3, Old Westbury-12 (5 Innings)

Old Westbury struck first in the top of the opening inning, capitalizing on an error and stringing together three hits to take an early 2-0 lead. Brooklyn responded immediately in the bottom half, as Lianna Gonzalez reached and later scored, while Addy Cook delivered an RBI single to even the score at 2-2.

The Panthers regained the lead in the second inning, scoring on a Brooklyn error to go up 3-2. After a scoreless third, Old Westbury broke the game open in the fourth inning with three runs on four hits, extending its advantage to 6-2.

Brooklyn got one run back in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Cook drew a walk to bring home Jenna Hood, trimming the deficit to 6-3. However, that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get.

Old Westbury put the game out of reach in the fifth inning, erupting for six runs on six hits. Key hits from Yelina Arias, Katie Knecht, Faith Binaso, and Amanda Varela fueled the inning as the Panthers stretched their lead to 12-3.

Cook led Brooklyn offensively, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and a walk. Haylee Burleigh and Vida Rodriguez each added a hit, with Rodriguez recording a triple. The Bulldogs were limited to five hits but drew five walks in the contest.

In the circle, Kureshma Dhanraj took the loss for Brooklyn, allowing six runs (five earned) over four innings. Jessica Bowe pitched the final inning in relief.

Old Westbury's Olivia DeRose earned the complete-game victory, striking out eight while allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits.

Game 2 Recap | Brooklyn- 2, Old Westbury-12 (5 Innings)

Old Westbury erupted for eight runs on seven hits in the top of the first inning. The Panthers strung together five consecutive hits to open the game and capitalized on timely extra-base hits.

Brooklyn was limited offensively through the first three innings, managing a hit during that span as Old Westbury pitcher, Hailey Ragozine, kept the Bulldogs off-balance. Ragozine went the distance, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out eight.

After falling behind 11-0, the Bulldogs broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning. Burleigh led off with a single, followed by a double from Cook to put two runners in scoring position. Jazlyn Roberts delivered Brooklyn's biggest hit of the game with a two-run single to right field, driving in both runners and trimming the deficit to 11-2.

Old Westbury (16-8) added an insurance run in the fifth inning behind an RBI single from Caragh Doyle to account for the final margin.

Brooklyn finished with five hits on the day, with Cook leading the way with another 2-for-2 performance, including a double. Burleigh and Victoria Elderbaum each added a hit, while Roberts drove in both of the Bulldogs' runs.

Dhanraj was charged with the loss for Brooklyn after her second start of the day, while Bowe provided relief, tossing five innings.

Old Westbury was paced offensively by Aliya Feerick, who went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a triple, while Madison Muehling added a triple and two RBI.
