Brooklyn, NY---Hosting their conference opener on Thursday, the Brooklyn College women's tennis team defeated Albertus Magnus College, 5-2, on the Roosevelt Tennis Courts. BC moves to 2-4 overall (1-0 CUNYAC) while the Falcons go to 0-5 (0-2 CUNYAC). Next Up: Brooklyn continues conference play against Hunter College at the USTA National Tennis Center on October 7. Â
Brooklyn opened the afternoon by securing two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.Â
At No. 2 doubles, Amara Stewart and Aniyah James earned a 6-4 victory over Shelby Bureau and Aprile Allen. Amar Abdel Gaphar and Kristen Vega followed with another 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles against Ashley Ouellette and Camily Silva.
Albertus Magnus claimed the No. 1 doubles match, as Madison Rossetti and Angelina Tilghman defeated Brooklyn's Medina Kuc and Alexis Goodman, 6-2.
The Bulldogs carried their momentum into singles play, winning four of the six matches.
At No. 3 singles, Amara Stewart battled past Ashley Ouellette, 6-4, 7-5. Tiffany Edwards added a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Shelby Bureau, 6-3, 6-0.
At No. 5 singles, Amar Abdel Gaphar turned in another dominant performance, defeating Anaeliz Guerrero, 6-1, 6-1.
The most dramatic singles match came at No. 2, where Aniyah James outlasted Angelina Tilghman in a three-set thriller. After splitting the first two sets, James prevailed in the deciding super tiebreaker, 10-6, to secure the point for Brooklyn.
Albertus Magnus earned their two singles points at No. 1 and No. 6. Rossetti defeated Alexis Goodman, 6-2, 6-2, while Abigail Francis edged Kristen Vega, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.
