Shawn Varghese Named Brooklyn College Male Student-Athlete of the Month – March
Sophomore Shawn Varghese, a tri-captain of the Brooklyn College Men’s Volleyball team, had a strong showing in his first season playing intercollegiate volleyball.
Playing in all 13 matches (and all 41 sets) in the month of March, Varghese totaled 54 kills (1.32 kills/set), 52 digs (1.27 digs/set), 29 assists (0.71 assists/set), 12 aces (0.29 aces/set) and 12 total blocks (0.29 blocks/set).
Varghese had his best match of the month in a five-set victory over borough and conference rival Medgar Evers, as the West Nyack, NY native recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 16 assists.
“Shawn has been an integral part of our team since joining us in the middle of February,” said head coach Joseph Contello. “His demeanor both on and off the court has been extremely helpful in steadying the emotions of our young team, new to the rigors of college play. Even though it is also a new experience for him, his even temperament, encouragement, and thoughtful words helped settle the team in difficult game situations, and led the coaching staff to add / appoint him as one our Captains. He has been a pleasure to coach, and is the steading force of the team.”
