Junior Women’s Basketball guard Lauren Plagainos had a solid month of February for BC helping to guide the Bulldogs to their second straight CUNY Athletic Conference South Division title and the #2 overall seed in the CUNYAC/Con Edison Women’s Basketball Championships, after posting an 11-2 league mark this season. The 11 wins in conference play this year also marked the most CUNYAC wins in a single season in program history.

Plagainos played a vital role for the Bulldogs down the stretch in the eight games during the month of February, helping lead BC to a 5-3 overall record, including a perfect 4-0 mark in the CUNYAC.

For the month, Plagainos averaged 11.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game, while averaging 25.5 minutes per ball game. Plagainos scored in double figures in six of the eight games in the month, including a month-high of 16 points in an 82-59 win against the College of Staten Island on February 11th.

In the conference tournament, Plagainos netted 11 points in the Bulldogs’ Quarterfinal round victory over #7 CSI, 79-62, on February 19th and later chipped in with a team-best 10 points in a Semifinals round loss to #3 Lehman College, 54-39, on February 22nd.

Playing in 22 games on the season and averaging 25.8 minutes per contest, Plagainos, a transfer from Mohawk Valley Community College, made an immediate impact to the BC Women’s Basketball program this season, averaging 11.6 points per game, while shooting a blistering 41.8% (61-for-146) from beyond the arc.

Within the CUNYAC, Plagainos finished the regular season ranked 16th in scoring, ninth in field goal percentage shooting (41.1% 85-for-207), 13th in assists (2.5 apg), first in three-point field goal percentage and second in three-point field goals made (2.8 3pg). Nationally among all of Division III, Plagainos ranks 15th in three-point field goals made and 18th in three-point field goal percentage.

Due in large part to the play of Plagainos, the Brooklyn College Women’s Basketball team has earned a berth in the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Women’s Basketball Championships as the #7 overall seed. This marks the third straight season that the Bulldogs will be making an appearance in the ECAC DIII Metro Tournament.

For her efforts, Plagainos has been named the Brooklyn College Female Student-Athlete of the Month, for the month of February.
