Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis Team (5-4, 4-1 CUNYAC) fell just short in their quest to hold on to first place in the CUNYAC Standings as the fell, 5-4, to Hunter College (4-0, 4-0 CUNYAC), the only other undefeated conference team at the start of the day.
Doubles play previewed what would be a back-and-forth match as all three flights were highly contested. Hunter grabbed first and second by scores of 8-5 and 8-3, but Brooklyn was able to come out on top in the third match as the duo of
Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Astoria, NY) and
Diana Rafailova (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) defeated Olga Chagin (Bronx Science / Bronx, NY) and Jessica Yi (Newport / Queens, NY), 8-4.
In singles play Brooklyn's
Erika Gil (Fort Hamilton / Brooklyn, NY) won in straight sets over Ericka Jaramillo (Townsend Harris / Jamaica, NY), 6-4, 6-1, as did
Diana Derks (Herlong / Frankfurt, Germany), who defeated Hunter's Jessica Yi, 6-4, 6-2.
Hunter was able to capture first and second singles in straight sets as Evgeniya Kim (Cardozo / Flushing, NY) defeated
Ruth Perez (EBC Bushwick / Brooklyn, NY) 6-0, 6-0 and Veronika Efimenko(#181 / Belarus) battled past
Olexandra Ovsiy (American / Dnepropetrousk, Ukraine), 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
With two matches awaiting completion, Hunter led 4-3. Brooklyn's
Nadine Alexander (Boys & Girls / Brooklyn, NY), who won the first set, could not hold on against Stafanie Smith (Cardozo / Little Neck, NY) as she lost her #3 singles match-up, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Sideris, however, was able to come from one set down to knock off Chagin, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in her #5 singles match.
Coach
Ahmad Odetalla, praised his teams effort, saying, "I am proud of the way we played tonight. We were facing one of the top teams on our schedule and we battled."
The team will look to bounce back in conference play on Friday when they host City College of New York at 3:30 pm.
