Cardinals Earn 5-3 Win Over Bulldogs

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer Team (2-4-1, 1-2 CUNYAC) lost their fourth straight game on Saturday afternoon as they fell to CUNYAC rival York College (3-5, 2-1 CUNYAC) 5-3.

The two teams started the game evenly throughout the first 10 minutes of play as no clear advantage could be gained by either squad.  A minute later, the momentum swung heavily in favor of the Cardinals as Richard Amponsah (Boys & Girls / Numasi, Ghana) scored on a cross from teammate Mclaney Moise (Port-au-Prince, Haiti).

That began a sequence of events that turned the half disastrous for the Bulldogs as York's Richidi Amadolu (Lome, Togo) scored his team's second goal after a free kick ricocheted off the crossbar to him for the easy score from five yards out.

Just minutes later, Brooklyn keeper Stamatis Boundouris (Xaverian / Brooklyn, NY) was handling the ball away from the goal when York gained possession and lofted a shot over his head.  BC defender Devorn Charles (Fatima College / Trinidad & Tobago) made a desparate attempt to try and stop the score, but could only get a hand out to do so and was immediately charged with a red card, leading to a York penalty shot.

Cardinal midfielder Khadim Kebe (EKR / Dakar, Senegal) took the kick and got it just over the outstretched arms of Boundouris to give his team the 3-0 first-half lead.

Playing down a man, Brooklyn will hold the score in tact until the break, hoping for a chance to regroup and redeem themselves in the second half.

York would not allow that to happen as just 1:30 into the half, Hugo Cicanois (436 / Santiago, Chile) lofted an amazing shot from about 40 yards out that sailed into the top of the goal, giving his team a 4-0 advantage.

Seemingly out of the contest, the Bulldogs showed their heart and determination as they battled back with two consecutive goals of their own.  The first came after a caromed shot bounced around in the middle of the box, Mack Diller (Brooklyn Tech / Brooklyn, NY) placed a shot in the corner of the net to get his team on the board.

A few moments later, a foul was called on York in the box and Diller was awarded a penalty shot, which he drove in for his second goal in a litle over two minutes.

Brooklyn was back in the game as they cut the Cardinal lead to 4-2 and put some doubt into the York bench.  The play intensified and there was a lot of physical play and flopping resulting in some yellow cards for both teams, however no goals were scored until York increased their advantage as Cicanois scored once again, giving his team the 5-2 lead.

The Bulldogs would still not go quietly as a Diller throw-in led to a nice cross by Drilon Sahitaj (Brooklyn Studio / Brooklyn, NY), who found Pajtim Gjonbalaj (FDR / Brooklyn, NY) on the right side of the field for the easy score, Brooklyn's third of the game.

"We were able to sure up some of the mistakes that we made our last time out, however we did not minimize our errors today and it cost us," said BC Head Coach Rawle Hensford.

The game ended moments later a 5-3 final.  Brooklyn will be right back in action on Monday as they travel to Farmingdale, New York to take on Farmingdale State at 4 pm.
