Bulldogs Start Season With Comeback 3-1 Win Over Maritime

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---Playing their first game of the 2010 season, the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (1-0) did not let an early 1-0 deficit slow them down as they came back with three unanswered goals to defeat the visiting Privateers of SUNY Maritime 3-1.

"The team showed a lot of composure and fight by coming from behind and not conceding a second half goal," said Head Coach Rawle Hensford.  "In order to succeed this season, we will need our effort to be collective.  We saw that in today's game."

Maritime appeared to be the stronger team early as they controlled the ball for most of the first 10 minutes, capitalizing on the games first goal at the 8 minutes mark as David Sparozic (Mahopac / Carmel, NY) took a cross from Tomas Federico (Islip / Islip, NY) and found the back of the net.

Coach Hensford's young squad responded quickly, as freshman forward Pajtim Gjonbalaj (FDR / Brooklyn, NY) scored the equalizer with assists from Muhammad Mutawakkil (Ulul-Alab / Nigeria) and Miguel Veliz-Fitz (FDR / Brooklyn, NY) a mere three minutes after the Maritime tally.

The Bulldogs gained momentum and were able to get a few good chances but did not convert until the game's 37th minute when Drilon Sahitaj (Brooklyn Studio / Brooklyn, NY) made a terrific cross to Gjonbalaj, who scored for the second time in the half and gave his team the 2-1 advantage.

As the teams entered the second half of play, Maritime regained control of the ball and kept the pressure on BC as the ball remained on one half of the field throughout much of the half's opening minutes.  The Bulldogs were able to get a run at Maritime's goal late in the 67th minute as Igor Kozlov (Elite / Amsterdam, Neatherlands) lofted a pass ahead to Mack Diller (Brooklyn Technical / Brooklyn, NY), who was able to beat the goal and find the open net to give BC their third unanswered goal.

Goalkeeper Stamatis Boundouris (Xaverian / Brooklyn, NY) was able to make some key saves late in the contest as Maritime kept the pressure throughout.   Boundouris finished with 9 saves in his first career start.

Brooklyn will be off for the next 8 days as the look to get their second win of the season on Saturday, September 11 against Purchase College before they begin conference play on Wednesday, September 15th at the College of Staten Island.
