Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Tennis team was victorious in its 2011 regular season finale, as the Bulldogs defeated borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) by a score of 8-1 on the BC Tennis Courts on Wednesday evening.
With the win, BC ends the regular season with a four game winning streak, as the Bulldogs improve to 4-9 overall on the season; while the Bears fall to 0-9 overall on the year with the loss.
Brooklyn set the tone for the match early on, sweeping all three doubles matches. The duo of
Matthew Micharlsen and
Anthony Chan downed the pairing of Muhammad Ali Bhatti and Derrick Akwei, 8-3, at #1 doubles.
Vesna Tan and
Qing Hui Tan easily handled Matthew Walsh and Conrad Nytko, 8-0, at #2 doubles; while
Cheyne Tribbey and
Mubashir Shabil Billah completed the sweep getting the better of Iqbal Husain and Matt Marino, 8-2, at #3 doubles.
A. Chan, R. Chan and Q. Tan continued to excel in singles play, as all three players rolled through their respective opponents in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at #2, #3 and #4 singles, respectively.
Completing the 8-1 BC victory was
Arvind Badhey, who defeated Walsh at #5 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and
Anthony Sideris, who cruised past Marino, 6-0, 6-1, at #6 singles.
The highlight match of the day came at #1 singles as Bhatti took home the lone St. Joe's (Brooklyn) win of the day over Micharlsen. After dropping the first set 6-2, Micharlsen showed his determination by battling back to take the second set 6-4, thus forcing a third set super tie-breaker. In the end, Bhatti would get the best of Micharlsen, taking the set and match 10-4.
Prior to the start of the match, seniors Badhey, R. Chan, Q. Tan and V. Tan were all honored for their hard work and dedication to the BC Men's Tennis program as part of Senior Day celebrations.
Brooklyn will now look towards post-season play, as the #7 seeded Bulldogs will travel to Staten Island, NY this Saturday, April 30th, as BC will take on the #2 seeded Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in the Quarterfinals of the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Tennis Tournament. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start time.
